Heard on French news tonight - 5 million French people carry a pocket knife. I guess in France they are mostly Opinels and Laguioles, but I'm a great fan of the bog-standard Swarmy. Well, perhaps not bog-standard, but with a corkscrew and the thing for getting stones out of horses' feet. And a blade, and tweezers, and a toothpick.

The rule I have always followed (actually the law) is you cannot carry it concealed if it is longer than your palm is wide. So the knives most French country folk carry would be illegal if concealed. Swiss fall in the good category.

I'd better leave my London Pride machete at home then.

I'd better leave my London Pride machete at home then. I guess that depends entirely on the size of your palms.

Machetes are not much good for cutting York hams!
People tend to forget that going to and from UK with a knife is likely to bring down the wrath of Doom on your head. I once saw a Frenchman at Waterloo station being given a really hard time by the police because he had a very small penknife in his pocket. He pleaded that he had forgotten it was there as it was his gardening knife and looking at it, it certainly was not more.

I habitually carry three pocket knives, although not all at the same time. For going out, I carry a "lady's leg" Laguiole, handy for that steak that resists the resto's standard knife.
For camping and hiking I formally used a Swiss Champ, probably not dissimilar to WhyNots pic but I have just changed to another Victorinox with a larger, locking blade and less tools, never did use the parcel carrier in thirty years.
For work I use a single handed opener that was handmade to my specs in Thiers, handy for preparing câble and opening oysters, shellfish and other heavy work.

I felt really small but it was a case of 'yes sir yes sir three bags full' I'll never do it again honest. When I said what about all the large kitchen that caravanners have with them he said that's OK they are there for a purpose. I said they are a lot more lethal than my SAK - he wasn't amused so I shut up.

Before the days of 9/11 and other such events, I regularly got on a plane with a pocket knife, never thought twice about it then, never taken off me or questioned…..we are talking 1980s 90s here though

An ex partner had a diddy little sewing kit taken from her by customs. It was from a Xmas cracker. The pillock seemed to think it could be used as a weapon.

I pulled the above S A K from the door pocket & showed that. Nice man waved me on with a "that's fine sir". Good job he didn't look in the pocket where my, probably illegal, one handed work knife was hiding. On another trip my car was searched & I was asked to cover up a disc cutter as " it could be used as a weapon".

When travelling to France my husband’s Leatherman is put in luggage that goes in the hold when flying, deep in the boot if in the car and doesn’t get taken if we travel by train.
He once almost had a fairly small Swiss Army knife confiscated at an airport but a wiser head’s opinion prevailed.
