A magazine can be used as a weapon if it's rolled tightly; the attitudes of the forces of order are sometimes too much by the book, with no idea of common sense.

I often think that these jobsworths are in a very difficult position. If you have ever had a boss who is a complete arse and is looking for anything to hang on an employee, then becoming a jobsworth could be the only way to survive. It is very stressfull for these guys, I try and help them when confronted with having to declare a sharp edged item. It's just another way of looking at it.

Machetes are not much good for cutting York hams! People tend to forget that going to and from UK with a knife is likely to bring down the wrath of Doom on your head. I once saw a Frenchman at Waterloo station being given a really hard time by the police because he had a very small penknife in his pocket. He pleaded that he had forgotten it was there as it was his gardening knife and looking at it, it certainly was not more. I had a similar experience at Portsmouth with my SAK. I felt really small but it was a case of 'yes sir yes sir three bags full' I'll never do it again honest. When I said what about all the large kitchen that caravanners have with them he said that's OK they are there for a purpose. I said they are a lot more lethal than my SAK - he wasn't amused so I shut up. I once flew from Düsseldorf to Stansted on the same plane as a lot of people returning home from a trade fair at the Messe. A lot of them were complaining that the mini Swiss Army Knives that they’d been given by one of the exhibitors had been confiscated by customs. The ones with the smug faces had obviously packed theirs in their hold luggage.

I remember a few years ago now about an American violin player entering England via Heathrow and had the instrument in it's case as hand luggage. When he was asked by security what was in the case the idiot replied a sub-machine gun. Within a couple of minutes he was spread-eagled on the floor surrounded by anti-terrorist folk in full combat gear including guns. Idiot of the first order.

That's the trouble with those automatons at airports. No sense of humour.

More than ten year ago I went by plane to Bluefields and had a pair if nail scissors taken from me that were not returned. returning to Barcelona three machetes nearly a meter long were not a problem.

And there was me thinking that security checked your baggage when you were about to board, not after you had arrived. Could this story BE bollox?

It was shown on the BBC news so not a lie. The security referred to were patrolling the airport not sat at a desk.
