What do I look for on the internet to find a place that sells wine in boxes rather than loose in a supermarket, are there localish cave's etc? Loose bottles are a nightmare to transport........

Sorry, bad wording on my part, I mean in a cardboard or wooden box in sets of 6, rather than just loose bottles, not a '3 or 5 litre box' of wine......

SuperU sometimes have boxes of 6. Failing that go to a local winemaker - there must be one somewhere near you after all this is France.

Maybe the local supermarkets sell bottles in a box of 6 as they have to unpack them from boxes to put bottles on the shelves.
i would definitely go to a local cave or wine shop rather than getting them from the supermarket, although even our small Spar and Carrefour City sell bottles of pretty decent local wines, so I’d happily buy boxes of bottles from them if for some reason our local growers couldn’t supply their wines.

A bit too late now but perhaps next year , go to the " la foire aux vins 2022" at any supermarket, they have just finished . Other than that a local cave is better than the standard supermarket wines.

Not in Marmande it's not! Côtes de Marmandais is horrible muck wherever you buy it from But generally speaking, yes, the best bet would be a local cave.

As has been said, during La Foire aux Vins the supermarkets sell them by the case.

Other than that a local cave is better than the standard supermarket wines. Don't know what you mean by "standard supermarket wines". Our supermarket has 4 aisles of wine from throughout France including expensive champagnes, premier cru Margaux and lots of wine from local growers. We prefer to buy locally but all caves do not produce good stuff.

Our Super U usually say Oui if they have cases out back. It must depend on the character of the staff member. Sometimes they just explain that all the stock is already on the shelves.

Buy the wine you want, stick it in a cardboard box and stuff paper around the bottles. Job done.

Our supermarket has 4 aisles of wine from throughout France including expensive champagnes, premier cru Margaux and lots of wine from local growers. We prefer to buy locally but all caves do not produce good stuff. We have three big supermarkets , chock full of wines but if we want something a little better , then we go to the cave/wine shop. We are not in a wine producing area , so by cave I meant specialist in wine. I have found that for the same price that you pay in a supermarket the quality of wine is better. Our budget doesn't allow for Margaux more than once a year.
