Life with the gutter-press I used to fancy Princess Caroline. OH has just showed me a vid of her. I think it is incredible what a few years can do for a woman. What she’s aged? How dare she. I daresay you look the same dapper self as you did 30 years ago. She looks good to me at 65.

Certain sections of the UK seem obsessed with the downfall of France. One could wonder whether this was to deflect the gaze from home problems.
There are difficulties everywhere: War, post Covid rebuilding, climate change.. Things are very uncertain, especially for younger people (for us oldies it is easier..we are certain that our time on this planet is limited.)
As with other countries, France has to cope with all these things. It is not the worst placed country to do that but dealing with the crises will be painful for everyone.
I can only speak of our little area, which is perhaps not typical...but new restaurants are opening all the time.. we now have 12 in Eymet..some will close but it is hardly the decline there was 10 years ago. This summer season was the busiest anyone can remember. New houses going up everywhere, even in the little mountain village in the Pyrenees where we have our apartment..At the same time costs are going up and for many people it is pushing them into poverty. I have more faith in Macron and France than Sunak and the UK but in the end they are both facing the same obstacles.

Cons of Living in France Paperwork. France has a reputation for being very bureaucratic. ... Visa Renewals are a Nightmare. This one goes along with the French bureaucracy above. ... High Taxes. ... The Language Barrier Can be Difficult. ... Jobs are Scarce. ... There Are A Lot of Strikes. ... Traveling Across France is Expensive.
Been to London lately?

Cons of Living in France Paperwork. France has a reputation for being very bureaucratic. ... And is pretty rubbish at doing it.Visa Renewals are a Nightmare. This one goes along with the French bureaucracy above. ... High Taxes. ... but high benefits. The Language Barrier Can be Difficult. ... To put it mildly.Jobs are Scarce. ... As in most countries. There Are A Lot of Strikes. ... Usually getting the desired results for the downtrodden.Traveling Across France is Expensive. Stay off the autoroute or get a bike.Been to London lately? My idea of Hell.

I predict that it will get a lot worse. Especially if there is a high tide combined with other abnormal conditions.
btw my pp was a cp lifted from Wikki and
‘She looks good to me at 65.‘
Being vertical is good.
’the downtrodden’
It has been a long time since I saw one of those in France. Asia maybe.

There are plenty of jobs here but just like the UK and many other countries in the world people don't want to do them anymore - bars/restaurants, agriculture, construction etc.
The strikes tend to result in short term bribes but little long term benefits, what exactly did the 'gilet jaune' protests achieve?

And prosecutions for 'over zealous' policing.

The language barrier? You can't blame France for that. If you go to live in another country that is one of the basic preparations, surely ?

Until it becomes a legal requirement for entry it is only available to those with the cash for lessons and time to achieve it. And a fresh enough brain to take it all in. Otherwise people can either muddle through with a dictionaire in hand or find a ghetto that speaks English.
