Can you spot the differences between September 1969 and today? The speech by Jacques Chaban Delmas in the Assemblée nationale: << La nouvelle société >>

The language barrier? You can't blame France for that. If you go to live in another country that is one of the basic preparations, surely ? Until it becomes a legal requirement for entry it is only available to those with the cash for lessons and time to achieve it. And a fresh enough brain to take it all in. Otherwise people can either muddle through with a dictionaire in hand or find a ghetto that speaks English. It is a legal requirement now for anyone wanting a visa that entitles them to work. Fortunately France offers subsidised classes for immigrants. The association that I go to charges 100 euros a year for 3 hours a week during term time, with further subsidies for people seeking work or on low incomes.

Ref Government sponsored programmes : My OH had some language lessons .. grammar, speaking, preparation for DELF/DALF etc for a couple of years.
He went one day a week but the lessons were available every weekday except Wednesday. Cost 20€ a month for those that could afford it but less depending on how many lessons you did or your circumstances.

I’ll investigate attending classes again. Sarkosy put the kybosh on those I was attending in the early 2000s At the time attending lessons involved 2x50 min drives / lesson. What with the fees I thought I could get by without. It has been ok up till present in that communication has never been too much of a problem for me. I believe there may be others here who might think otherwise. That is their problem.
Is there a link that explains qualifying circumstances for relief in Dept 40?

During his tenure as Prime Minister and whilst in his other governmental roles and in concert with others much was achieved for the welfare of old people and support for the minimum wage amongst other 'radical' moves. A good man by the sound of it.

Thanks for that Flober. As I am pretty well past my sell by date and been in France for over twenty years, it looks like it shouldn’t be a problem, but, things could change

Wot I did was to sign up at the pôle emploi to "look for a job". What you do not speak French says my conseilleur, I did, we will send you to lessons, once a week for free. I think this scheme still exists, but I may be wrong. Any road up, the lessons were good enough for me to improve my French language skills and breeze through my 'interrogation' to gain my Carte nationale d'identité nearly five years ago.

I believe the first ANPE branch to give French lessons was Confolens (16) in the late 90s

It is all very well for women, French or otherwise. What with their proportionally larger Broca's areas. Probably due to the exercise that it gets.

‘ Police overtime ? ‘ And prosecutions for 'over zealous' policing.’
Treading on the cracks in the pavement……
What is in a name?
Bryson writes I like Norfolk. I lived there for ten years until 2013 and have grown convinced that there is nothing wrong with it that a few hills and a little genetic variability wouldn’t fix. As my son used to say: ‘ Norfolk: too many people, not enough surnames’

No one has any control over who their parents were or where they were born.

I think it is incredible what a few years can do for a woman. Or a man. But people tend not to comment on that.
