Since you ask, yes.
Been involved in football since I was a young kid. Following an injury became a referee in England 1974. Progressed to the Premier League, included being selected to referee in the Under 18 World Cup in Japan in 2003, and refereed in stadiums used in the World Cup the year before. Retired in 2006 and then refereed in France until 2019. I am now a match delegate for the French FA.
So yes, I have quite an insight into football.
I guess you might therefore know my good friend Phil Don? We have a joint friend in Joël Quiniou a well known World Cup referee amongst other things. Phil was once head of refereeing at the Football Association, incidentally now living in Spain

Philip Don was a top ref. In fact, there were lots of good refs at the time.
Milford, Poll, Gallagher, Durkin, Cooper, Elleray etc

He actually gave the Croatian guy a third yellow after the game for dissent!!!!!!

England were about to play at the time but the Welsh and the others were just as bad. With the killings at the club in America last weekend and the rule imposed by Qatar's rulers they should have all threatened to walk. They have the power to change things but changed there minds. To be honest I find the criticism about the England soccer team's 'inaction' absurdly hypocritical when the UK imports a huge portion of their natural gas requirement from Qatar and other European countries including France are investing heavily in the country. You either stop trading with countries that have appalling human rights laws in protest or 'look away' in blissful ignorance, complaining about a country's stance on homosexuality whilst buying their gas makes you look foolish. about 10% of LNG gas used in the UK comes from Qatar directly , but a lot more goes into Belgium and Spain and various other European countries , so will probably end up in pipelines. An interesting point is that Qatar are investing heavily in Wales LNG !

Phil has lived in Spain for several years now. Both Phil Don and David Elleray gave up refereeing, or in Phil's case, running the Premier league refs to give more time to being headmasters at their relative schools.Phil was put in the top 100 refs of all time, Joël Quiniou is probably best known for supervising eight matches in the FIFA World Cup, one in 1986, three in 1990 and four in 1994. He refereeed a game I was involved in, in Belgium and he was possibly the best ref I ever knew, sorry Phil you were a close second.
