Grasping at straws there Mr P.I. The reason for the Volendam tragedy ( 21 years ago) was because all but one of the emergency exits were blocked !

‘That creates intimacy, too,’
As well as support for the Chinese economy
Damien Mc Fadden. Obviously a subliminal message from the anti-Christ

The candles and the tealights in all the illustrations are well below anything combustible.
But I am with you though, the only time for candles and tealights is during a power cut and with battery LED lihts there are many far safer alternatives.
I have a table that was burnt to a crisp over a 3" diameter and maybe 1/2" deep by one single tealight, I bought it like that cheap and repaired the damage.
I would freak out if ever i saw the flicker of a candle in the rented apartments, I had decorative parfumed ones in glass gobelets until renters started lighting them.

The DM don't need to bother trying to reduce the population. The government has that particular task in hand.

I see no problem with reducing the Daily Mail reading population.

What actually happened : The fire took place in a building that housed three bars. On New Year's Eve the cafés were packed with more than 350 young people between 13 and 22 years of age when a short blaze happened in the café De Hemel ("Heaven") which was located on the top floor after a sparkler hit Christmas decorations that hung from the ceiling. The temperature in the room reached 400 °C (752 °F).
There was great panic and the heat, lack of oxygen and people falling over each other made escaping extremely difficult. There also were bars in front of the windows and there were too few emergency exits, all of which contributed to the high number of injuries. Survivors stated that shortly after the fire began all the lights went out contributing to the panic.
A bit different to a few festive decorations to brighten up your home in the Winter ?

Amazing what a "short blaze" can do.

The fire was out in Three minutes!

A flash fire. Is the correct meaning. Amazing amount of heat generated in a very short time like a bomb. The flames were extinguish in 3 min due to lack of oxygen, but the heat remained. My niece had to deal with the injured in the hospital burns unit, she saw the results of this chaos. Not the best way to brighten up your home. It may be the reason people have gone off having real candles in their Christmas tree. Safety above all. If there is a proven risk, don't ignore it.
