Why is there a medicine shortage in France? Amoxycillin seems worst hit, but many others seem to be in short supply?

Why do you ask this ? Antibiotics are by prescription only in France.

Youngest daughter works in a pharmacie in Paris and says there are now constant shortages of all manner of drugs, this is partly down to government cutbacks but in the main it's due to a general shortage in Europe following a spike in various viruses after the pandemic hit.

At pharmacy the other day and he said that he would be giving me a generic version of my regular medicine. Explained to me that all ingredients were the same but they were the size of horse pills. Result of shortages?

Result of shortages? No .. necessary economy by the hard-pressed/hard-up French Health Service. My generic heart/blood-pressure tablet costs less than half of the cost of the Brand name version. And as I take one every day .. the savings mount up.

Most of it seems to be due to over-demand, according to what I have read. Too many people suffering from transmissable illnesses now we are all (mostly) mixing together as we did pre-Covid. Lots of children who have little immunity, from having been separated from or kept at a 'safe' distance from other children and other people during the Pandemic, have need of Amoxicillin - the most used anti-biotic in France, apparently.

And therein lies the problem. Antibiotics do not attack viruses. They will attack bacteria. But the French feel cheated if they do not leave the doctor with at least 4 different types of medication on their prescription - so antibiotics have been inappropriately prescribed and now there is a shortage. Worse of course is that this type of behaviour leads to antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Why do you ask this ? Antibiotics are by prescription only in France. Sorry, I don’t understand your reply? I asked why you thought there was a shortage in France , seeing as you live in England . Nothing devious meant ! We use as little medecines as possible , so wouldn't know if there is a shortage.

You're lucky then. Most of us only take what is necessary.

Brits possibly, but there's a severe over-medication culture in France and it won't go away overnight. As Exile pointed out.

Think yourself lucky though if you need to be on the receiving end of such a money spinner. I have taken a lot of drugs in my time. By some miracle I am not presently dependant on steroids. Thinks. Like throwing petrol on a fire that you want to put out. There must be something about the way some Brits think as represented by their incumbent Guv.

We have seen people coming out of our pharmacy with bulging shopping bags as though they had benn to the supermarket for the weekly shop
