Lovely! You'll be a cornerstone of ACFAA before you know it Then there's the Eymet Cricket Club..... Sad thing is the deceased was the chairperson of the cricket club. Only 63 years old as well and a very sudden and unexpected death. Eymet Cricket club consists of younger Pakistani and Afghanistani players and a few older Brits. Times are changing

An apt response. How is the condensation problem now Johnny? Any progress? It's pretty dry after movement in the house and the CH on, its only when we go away we have found the issue, we will leave the VMC on this time and see what happens, also we will leave the shutters open as when the sun comes out, the house warms up quite fast, busy patching up the plaster and repainting where necessary, but it's taking us both a long time this visit to build up enthusiasm, still recovering from Covid in Nov and Flu at Christmas I think.........

Good idea re the vmc .. re leaving the shutters open do check your house Insurance as many/most stipulate that shutters must be closed when you are away from home - never mind 'away' in a different country altogether. If you can leave some open then choose those upstairs - slightly less risk of robbery that way.
Edit : Have you thought of leaving a house key with your nice neighbours ?

Bon courage, JD! Bear in mind the insurance implications of leaving shutters open if the house is unoccupied. Especially if you're leaving tools there. Ah..sue beat me to it

Response to Annabellespapa, I had not realised there were posting on a subsequent page.
It would have happened anyway, it has happened to me several times on properties without a VMC or where it has been turned off, the VMC cannot make any more water evaporate from a U bend than would normally happen through evaporation. The amount of evaporation will vary according to the varying humidity levels, some years traps dont dry out, other years they do, sinks and showers are always the first.

I get the impression that the Cricket Club was another vehicle created by the deceased to raise funds for charity above all so something else to be admired amongst his many achievements.
I was lucky to have already met him, but for your encouragement it would not have happened and would now be too late.

A top tip I learnt on the old forum (I think) was to put some cooking oil or similar down the toilet and sinks to stop evaporation, it also is supposed to help with them not freezing but if we are away over winter I put a slug of neat screenwash in the toilets and showers under the oil. It did get to -10 back around 2011.

As Sue said, if you can leave a key with a neighbour or in our case we have a keysafe with a combination, I will ask a friend to check over our house before my trip on the 14/1, mainly to highlight any issues and if needed I can bring stuff with me to sort any unforeseen problems. We have AXA house insurance and we asked that it excluded, having to shut the shutters when always leaving the house. Since we had double glazing installed, I had to remove the shutters and never put them back.

I am pretty sure I have played at Eymet Cricket Club, my cricket club- Ombersley in Worcestershire got a team together and played a few matches about 25+ years ago, loved the Dordogne and we also played near Dol De Bretagne in Brittany in the grounds of a Chateau.

We drive though Ombersley everytime we go to see the MiL, I think Philip Serrell ex Antiques Roadshow lives somewhere round there also, saw him walking the main street one time........

Yes you are correct JD, Phillip (Pip) Serrell lives about 1/4 mile from us, on a lane as you go down to the river Severn at Holt Fleet, he was a very good cricketer and played for Ombersley for years, he is an auctioneer by profession and has an auction house in Malvern. He has a vintage Bugatti bought well before his TV fame that trundles around the village. He pretends not to like being recognised but he will keep on wearing that Burberry scarf that gives him away. In fact he asked Burberry for sponsorship but they refused. I believe he has a logo which is a black and white image of him wearing the scarf. www.scarsdalelodge.co.uk/museum-of-freemasonry-online-talk-3-2/Where does the MIL live ?
