We are not there to see the cranes and we usually miss the return North because we return to France in late March. It does seem very early so what does it all mean. Could be a long, hard winter.

It means that they think that the Winter is over , so don't need to continue further South
So it not unusual

Hardly worth the effort of the aller retour surely? I know how they feel though, I fitted my winter tyres about the time they flew South

Thousands of cranes going North very low over our house this evening. I have never seen so many in one go Me too, there were 4 waves of them, the first must have been several thousand alone, the others only a little smaller, an amazing spectacle for me in my first year.
Thank heavens there were no flights taking off or landing because they were at pretty much the exact altitude the planes pass over my property.

Great counting everyone. Like the joke, " how do you know there were 2004? Well there were the four on the outside and a couple of thousand in between.

We don't count , just gaze in wonder at something that sends shivers down our spines. It is an ancient and marvelous spectacle , the migration.
PS:
If you think that the folk living here 2000 years ago must have seen the same thing that we are now destroying , it brings you back to the reality of what is important , and it ain't facebook !
