Reading a Dutch forum, some members have had serious problems where the linky meter failed. They subsequently received a guestimate bill from Edenis for thousands. Edenis stated the guestimate was based on previous years use. myself, I have been cutting back electric use since last year when I used large quantities of power, so now if the linky failed, I might get a bill ten times my consumption today. While cutting down on power since that large consumption, I have kept a daily log of the meter to identify the heavy users. If the linky fails, I will at least have a true record of power use and should not be subject to guestimates (I live in hope). Does anyone else here record their daily use of power to try to reduce consumption?

OH has been recording daily (even hourly) consumption since we had the 2 hours mid-day HC withdrawn last November. Not particularly with a view to reducing consumption as we're already doing everything that can be done to manage the HC/HP efficiently. When (if) the mid-day HC are reinstated in April, I suspect that it will have become such a routine habit that he'll continue.

Sorry for asking how do you check your meter? is it one of those things you plug into a socket? Not sure what you mean here? You can't check it to see if its about to fail, but you can take daily/weekly/monthly reading from it to keep a better record of usage.........Is that what you mean?

Since the power scandal/ripoff shenanigans, we keep a monthly record of usage both in the UK and here, and have got our footprint usage in the UK down from about 400W to under 150 ish now.......its amazing what you can save.....

We can't check our linky meter, it is outside our property next to the road. What we can do , is go online and look at our daily use of electricity. It shows we spend a little more than €3/day on electric , so can never get an incorrect facture.

I take a photo of the actual meter, just in case of trouble.

Do you really mean W (watts) and not KWh (kilowatt hours) and are you talking daily, weekly or monthly?
Do you heat with electricity, gas or other means?
Without knowing the above the 150 ish figure is meaningless.

That is the best way of checking it, you can also check bi-hourly consumption, historic that is and not actual, for the actual you do need to be looking at the display.
Editted, I think that is wrong, if you have the app then you can check the instantaneous consumption from wherever you are.
I found yesterday that my 3hp = 2.2kw compressor was drawing 3kva, right on the limit of one phase (I am tri-phase) later when cooking a meal with the halogen oven and 2 rings of the induction hob it was pulling 4650 VA (watts) but had not tripped, probably because both appliances pulse on and off so the Linky unlike the first generation is mimicking the trip characteristics of a thermal disjoncteur and not tripping with a 50% overload maintained for 20 seconds at a time.

Edenis stated the guestimate was based on previous years use. It is communicating all the time with the mother ship so they should have the readings even if the thing does fry but there is something about consent meaning that perhaps they only download the figures once a month as that is the frequency of the consumption reports which I was recieving from Direct Energie. You can set up access to check yor consumption on a weekly, daily or bi-hourly basis and to do so you have to give them permission for the meter to communicate those figures, I suggest that you do this if you are concerned about Linky getting amnesia!

There is, at the moment, a programme of replacement of some Linky meters because of failure to read true figures, not unlike the replacement of main switch's a couple of years ago. We had three meters fitted on the same day and two of those have had to be replaced, the third seems to be of a different batch, so fingers crossed.

I'm still wondering about the promises made by the providers regarding Linkys meters saving you money. So far they just seem to be a source of concern. But of course they do manage to put meter readers out of work which pleases the shareholders.

We have had a Linky(Three phase) for several years and it has behaved itself very well. It did force me to upgrade our max power from 6kVA to 9kVA because it correctly detected that we were overloading one phase at certain times, mainly concerning the cooker and kettle, which our old meter fortunately missed. Last year we upgraded again to 12kVA so that I could set up a timed and temperature control system running electric heaters throughout the winter. This was to save the very expensive propane gas. The gas CH is still set as a back up if the weather is particularly bad. We also changed our contract to “Tempo” and my new electrical heating runs during the cheap period only. I monitor our usage almost daily and have chosen the bi-hourly record. The displayed data shows our use for every half hour period in terms of kWh and actual cost in €. It shows the daily figures and the cumulative, monthly figures. There is an annoying lag on the results, usually about two days but at least I can see if it is running as expected even from the UK. If there was a Linky failure I assume that all the fine detail data will be available to allow EDF to assess an accurate bill. I hope that our Linky keeps working.
