Here is a good article on the BBC site about the perilous state of the French health system:

I think perilous is a bit strong. In the last few months, I've had to wait a bit longer in France for treatment than in previous years, but speaking, a 2 week wait for initial physio appointment and 6 weeks to see an hospital specialist. Although I found out that when seeing the specialist, my doctor could've bypassed the wait and arranged for me to have treatment immediately. But it is nothing like the UK. Between Christmas and New Year, whilst in the UK, I had the misfortune to have to contact 111 for my mother. The theory is you get a call back within 2 hours from a clinician, that is once you get through on the phone. 1 hour holding on to get through. 4 hour wait for a call back and an appointment at the hospital offered at 10.30 at night for my 88 year old mother. When asking for antibiotics, we had to go back into the system and got a call from the Dr at midday the next day. Another contact by us that morning as we hadn't heard anything, resulted in a recorded call back saying a 4 hour delay and then eventually called back at 6pm that evening. Not the fault of the staff, but the system isn't working.

I find it interesting that @joseph is keen to tell us that the French system is struggling - and it certainly is in some areas - while the UK system was already in meltdown before the various groups felt they had no alternative but to go on strike.
In both cases the availability of the necessary skilled labour is an issue. Bed availability in some areas is also a common factor for some areas of France but OH was immediately admitted just before Xmas when she had blood oxygen issues.

Another form of racism ? We don't like people from Selby/Norfolk ...... those that don't come from our village/town/country ?

Nifty, if you're referring to my Biggles, you've mixed him up with someone else. Hampshire born, raised in Northants.

Well, as far as I am concerned , the French health system is alive and kicking. Went for a regular blood test ( as do all folk of course) . No one waiting ahead of me , straight into the phlebotomist ( looked that up ), easy peasy . Results online the same evening .
