This morning I read that the start of the new Entry/Exit System has been delayed again and will not be active this summer. The new start date is vaguely described as “at least until the autumn”. I am not bothered by the data collection, the delays and how it will be used at the borders but I am concerned that my passport visa pages might run out before it starts. At the last renewal I was not aware of the numerous stamps that were going to fill my passport pages and I bought the basic ten page version. Given my time again I would have chosen the fat one with twenty pages. If they do manage to implement the new EES in the autumn I will be alright.

"They" being who, the UK government? The French government? The EU?

I heard something this morning about fingerprint scans being delayed. Is this part of the same new setup? Glad I'm inside looking out rather than outside looking in.

"They" being who, the UK government? The French government? The EU? Schengen region in the EU. I suppose the system will only become live when all relevant members are ready to implement it at the same time.

Yes, the fingerprint recording and subsequent scanning is part of the system. There will also be a photo taken and the two pieces of data will be checked on entry to and exit from the EU borders. One reason is to check the 90/180 day rule but it must be part of an attempt by the EU to generally control their borders, particularly from illegal immigration.

Not before time, it begs the question though will the open borders between EU countries remain contrôle free?
If so then I dont think anybody in the EU aside from the Maires of Calais, Boulogne & Dunkerque are going to be bothered about illegals getting in as long as they can continue to facilitate their onward journey.
Actually you can add Paris to the above, I drove through at a crawl last time, total gridlock, I was amazed how many migrant camps are tucked right beside flyovers etc that cant be seen unless you are going very slow or at a dead stop and can take your eyes off the road in front.

Seeing as the UK has started "hunting" EU illegal workers , won't be long before they start to do the same in the EU ?

You are ahead of the game compared with the report in The Times today where they give the same news with quite a long description of how ETIAS will operate. This delay will at least save this summer’s travellers some money, time and inconvenience. For me it is the EES process that I would like to be implemented soon.

Thanks for the link JD. Although some visitors will breathe a sigh of relief I expect my passport to be full of visa stamps by May 2025 and I will need a new one. Perhaps if that happens I will buy a 20 page passport which should see me out, one way or another. On reflection, a standard 10 page one will probably be sufficient.

If Starmer gets UK back into the EU then it may never be necessary.
