In this currant financial climate Iam surprised anyone can afford to eat out. The 'have's will always be able to afford to eat out, it's the growing number of 'have not's' that are struggling.

Look on the bright side, people still have jobs because others have been out for meals. Maybe more of us ought to have meals out if there’s sufficient money, even if just occasionally, and it helps raise the spirits - another plus!

Affluent south v non affluent north. Best way I can phrase it. Never heard of Cancale Any more stereotypes you would like to try out on the assembled crowd? Yesterday sunny Nice was 1C warmer than Cancule. I worked 2 years in the South of France and believe me there are lots of not so affluent people there. There those that know. There are those that don't know. Then there are those who don't know, they don't know. I think many here will have decided which category fits you.

Yes I read about the financial climate in France but driving around seeing restos full in Cancale, St Malo busy at weekends, hardly a vacant shop premises in Dinan Seeing so many new houses being built everywhere we go, seems contradictory but the markets (financial) are picking up and the financial climate is noted to be hard?

I agree, Tim but that always been the case hasn't it? I remember the times in our marriage when we lived hand to mouth and wondered how people had money to be able to the things we couldn't even dream about having.

garbo,we used to have a place in the 04 dept, Alpes de Haute Provence very nice too but sorry PACA is nowhere near as busy as Cancale is in February. I find that hard to believe given the timing of the Fêtes de Citron and Mimosa True and we have enjoyed being at the fete Mimosa and yes it's extremely busy, with garbo living there you would think he might have mentioned it? Maybe I should have phrased it: We went to Cancale a very small town, known basically for its moules and huitres being "grown" along the coastline, plus the sheer number of restos were packed on a Saturday lunchtime in mid February with long waiting times for getting a parking place will be hard to beat in a similar size town elsewhere in France. Any good?

I was just responding to the comment 'anyone'. There are many for whom the cost of living crisis is irrelevant both here and elsewhere.

We all spend our money on different things, eating out is not one of our priorities, actually even after 43yrs its never been much of a necessity would rather spend on some new machinery.

The have nots elsewhere never ate out. I question the term " have nots" , quite a few seem to have differing priorities than many " haves" ?
