I have a SMS message on my phone this morning advising me that our car does not have a visible Vignette Crit'Air stuck on it and that we should get one within 48 hours to avoid a fine. There is a link which takes me to what seems to be a government site where I should order this vignette at a cost of 3.11€ I haven't heard anything about this vignette crit'air and the cost makes me wonder ........
Any advice would be very welcome please.

Scam they never send out anything like that. If you ever need to buy the sticker make sure it is the genuine site.

The crit air stickers are to permit your car to enter (or not) certain towns and cities depending on its polluting factor. The cost is minimal but you have to apply online.
The SMS is a scam .. you should not click on the link as that way the scammers know your mobile phone number is live.
I got an SMS the other day .. tho both our cars already have the stickers 😶
Edit : Veem it might be a good idea to block the scanner's number .. plus, depending on the age of your mobile you can activate the phone's scam detector so it won't display scam SMS to you.
Please don't go anywhere near the scammer's webpages .. if you were to fill in details i.e. name, address and bankcard details .. all those would be misused.
The government don't send out sms like that .. and there is no fine .
Most people who don't visit big towns/cities don't need a ctit'air sticker.

Agree
Ask yourself, how would the authorities know your mobile number to send you an SMS. Even assuming they did that.

Several things about this SMS had rung alarm bells. I agree exile - the thought had crossed my mind too. Sue, the phone this message came through to is not all that old, but it is simply a click-to-close phone with no fancy features. Thank you Mysty and I shall now stop concerning myself with it further.
I felt sure that if this were genuine, someone on here would already have posted about it.

Agree Ask yourself, how would the authorities know your mobile number to send you an SMS. Even assuming they did that. Technically the prefecture has your number if you have registered a car anytime in the last few years but they would never contact you for a critair.

But there are no crt'air zones in Charente. Can the prefecture in Charente share that number with other prefectures or is that not a breach of sharing personal information?

The cost is the SMS is genuine €3.11 to which postage has to be added (another 61c) so that alone should have been a red flag for the SMS.

Please could someone tell me if this certificate is required for cars that are visiting France for several weeks each year, from UK. The sites referenced in these posts are quite interesting and I started to complete the application but stopped when it asked for my car’s reference number. I am sure it will be on my registration document though that will have to wait for a trip into the driveway. Thanks.

If you go through somewhere that you need the critair then you could be fined of your stopped.

We have one, bought as we usually drive to the south of France via Lyon, where it can be needed, although we haven’t driven to our French home since Covid arrived. I expect I need to check the date - it could have run out or might do soon.
