Overpaid ex footballer calls out government. Fine, but not using his celebrity to do so. Had he stated a right wing view most of you would be screaming for him to be suspended or sacked. Find him a safe Labour seat so he can mouth off; maybe he could give Mr. J. Corbyn that well known independent candidate a run for his money. Dont pretend it is a free speech issue, that is rollocks.

Unfortunately for him in this instance, he is a celebrity, had any one of us said that, no one would have batted an eyelid. Celebrities have the right to say what they like just like the rest of us. From afar it seems to me that the UK government are trying to prevent any remarks against it, and we can say what we like and no one will notice, but when a well known celebrity says something they don't like the government starts the ball rolling to bring down that person, especially when he is paid for some of his services by the BBC, currently being run by a Tory supporter and someone who arranged a rather large loan for a former PM.
They do it often as a way to divert attention when their actual policy is not really appreciated by most and move that attention to something or someone else. Just look at their remarks when being questioned about NHS strikers (or others striking recently), apparently is is all the fault of the Nurses, Doctors and Paramedics.

He's a freelance presenter and not directly employed by the BBC so unless his contract/agreement with the Beeb specifically bans him from airing his political views publicly surely he should be able to say what he likes?

Unfortunately very few realise that he is not actually a BBC employee, as are many of their news presenters, who are also freelance.

Showing your true colours. This is absolutely about free speech. Something the current government is desperate to stop.

This has also rebounded on the BBC today, as they have had to cancel all their TV sport today, as well as much of their radio sport too.

Its completely backfired, the premier league have said the BBC don't have rights to their commentary feed, so MOTD tonight, if it goes ahead will feature no presenters, no pundits, and no commentary.

He is probably a BBC employee, according to the Inland Revenue who are claiming over £4,000,000 in back taxes

Still ongoing.
The BBC is about the nation not about an arrogant group of presenters backing a person who has got too big for his boots. Nothing to do with freedom of sceech.
