We were in carefour this morning and the pink ladys looked good so I bought one popped it on the scale and put it in the trolly without checking the price. When it went through I saw it said 78 cents, its about the only apple I like but that is pricey for an apple. No idea if they used to be cheaper than that but guess they were it must be hard now for the average working family buying fruit and veg not really an issue for us as we are not big veggie or fruit eaters. She said why did you just buy one apple, I said in case it was old which they are sometimes and un edible she said what if its nice.

I usually buy 2 kg bags of the cheapest (€1.30 a kg) for the horses. I eat most of them as they are so sweet (taste wise, for you lot looking for a joke).

Buying any fruit "out of season" is always more expensive . Apples average €2.99/kilo at the moment , they have probably been stored under nitrogen all Winter , a costly buisness.

I gave up on apples before Xmas. Every time I was tempted they either rotted quickly, were under ripe, or the skin was as tough as the plastic packaging on most hardware you buy today. Recently I tried a tray of four that were expensive but looked promising................completely tasteless. Even the chickens walked away from them.

I do the same for our horses. and very seldom do I get one that's even bruised. I slice them thinly to add to feeds and the apples smell lovely. The dog even waits for his slice each time I slice them.

We paid $1 for an apple in a supermarket last year in Florida but then eggs were over $6 a dozen.

At this time of year apples on sale have been in cold store for 4/5 months. They aren't at their best. I try to buy mine from the local farm. They are generally half the price of supermarkets, and at that cost are more acceptable.

The grande surfaces charge more because they are pre-rotted for our convenience.

I assumed it was fresh I have seen them from Chile but that might have been in the summer. We just ate it a bit tough but tasted as pink lady's do.

You mean that they don't tell you where the apples are from in Carrefour? There are no fresh apples in the shops at the moment , they are all from storage ( quite often nitrogen , as I posted earlier) , apple time is at the end of the Summer!
