To see the eventual outcome of this trend look across the Atlantic, where the business interests are the biggest lobby groups and find their way into government panels, law making think tanks and regulatory departments.

‘ No, the ecologists are extremists as we all know, but globalisation has nothing to do with water use in France. We need the ecologists to balance the scales. A small percentage of the farming community have the politicians in their pockets , EU farming politics is directed at less and bigger farms . It makes for easier manipulation ‘ Easy to say, difficult to demonstrate on a National scale. Where does politics end and business begin. From the French perspective, it seems to me that the Mayor of every commune has strong links with agriculture or production or developers. There is a lot of room for temptation to stray from the prescribed path. And a lot of opportunity to help one’s own business interests relations. Mayors in local government have very little power,
Agriculture policy is dictated from Brussels via Paris via the Prefecture.
Everything is comparative and a sum of its parts sort of a top down or bottom up debate.

As far as Agriculture in France goes , it is certainly top down . Farmers have no power at all , they demonstrate and burn tyres , but it doesn't help much. Due to the subsidies given to farming , the government ( read EU PAC) has the upper hand . If you don't follow the rules that are made in Brussels/Paris , then your subsidies are decreased.

Cernunnos are you complaining ?
Would you rather be in a ‘free market’ situation such as the U.K. ?
What system of agriculture would you prefer?
How could it be made to work?
edit Which brings us on to my discovery today
Caesarism. ‘ a final phase of modernity that would succeed democracy’

I see there is a report in the press today saying that the water ways in New Zealand are in a shocking state, and it would appear to be down to intensifying dairy/meat farming, with overuse of fertilisers and sewage discharges. No one is safe it would seem.

You just have to be on your toes all the time as they keep changing the goalposts. We get at least three checks every year , they send young kids, just out of school with Ipads , the last one was very nice but reported me for removing a hedge , which I hadn't, but it looked like it on the satellite photo because I had cut back the brambles!
Since when is there a free market in the UK ? The farmers there are just getting used to the new UK subsidie system.
I would prefer that farmers get paid for what they produce, but ten thousands of office workers would be out of work

Bankers ’ The former Ukip leader described NatWest’s leadership as “morons”. “That statement at 5.42pm on Tuesday from the board was one of the most extraordinary pieces of stupidity I’ve ever seen in my life,” he said. “They’ve underestimated the reputational issue, they’ve underestimated what public perception of right and wrong will be and they’ve underestimated my determination . . . I literally don’t know how much longer I can do this [campaigning] — it’s 4am to midnight every day. It’s just insane. Luckily, cigarettes and a few large glasses of gin keep me going, but I’m going to fall over at some point.” The sooner the better?
