Watched this WW1 film last night and was an emotional wreck by the end. All filmed on one camera apparently and the cinematography is simply amazing. Well recommended 👍

You were the only people watching the film or the only English speakers?
I recall going to watch a film in VO at the Multiplex at Amiens, cant recall the film but the VO was English, I was shocked to discover that only 40km away from a place where nobody knew or understood a word of English there were educated French people who would go to watch films to improve their language skills and enouh of them to warrant the Multiplex regularly showing films in VO, it was the seed that made me develop a social circle and sporting activities away from where I was living. Had a VO film been shown there nobody would have been in the auditorium yet the projected Bienvenue Chez Les Ch'tis in the biggest town square and car park and there were thousands trying to cram in to be able to see the screen, I suppose bein free was a factor.
All these years later proximity to a large town and city was the most important criteria in my house search.

Well recommended 👍 I was assuming that this was the 2019 version of the film 1917. From the other posts maybe you meant another, earlier film. We saw the latest version, in English, at the cinema in Gueret. It was much better than “Dunkirk” which had many disappointing features. We are expecting to see the new “All quiet on the western front” as soon as we are near a cinema showing it either in France or England.

I was a bit disappointed with ‘Dunkirk’ too

The new version of All Quiet on the Western Front is outstanding. While it follows the main thrust of the book it does deviate a little but not to the detriment of the story. Ideally, you need to watch it in German (with subtitles if necessary) - the English dubbing is not, imo, well executed.

You were the only people watching the film or the only English speakers? There was only 4 people watching the film. Obviously didn't make that as clear as I thought I had.

I remember seeing Schindlers List at the cinema. After it had finished the whole audience walked out in a sort of stunned silence……

1917 has recently been on the box. Very impressive but I had the feeling it would have been better in the cinema on a big screen. There are few films leave me with that impression.
