Norfolk got the answer. The full word in the bible is Ecclesiastes. Perhaps I should ask Norfolk for his reasoning then. I get the Eccles part, just not where the rest of it - 'iastes' - comes from? Ecclesiastes is one of books in the bible

I know that. But after Eccles (which I know is a town near to Manchester) where from your clue does the 'iastes' part come?

I realise that, because Eccles has the stated 6 letters.
So let me put this another way. Which part of your clue says to begin with a part of the Bible - Ecclesiastes, and then take away 'iastes'?

You are overcomplicating this. I asked for a town that appeared in the bible and Eccles does as part of ecclesiastes

But that is not enough. I could equally say that you are understating this. In a cryptic clue each part of the answer should be evident in the clue and 'iastes' just was not.
Let's leave it now and concentrate on Norfolk's clue.

You obviously have a problem with the clue. Can you address your concern to the crossword compiler of the Daily Telegraph as I lifted it,nearly verbatim, from them

I have got nowhere asking ajm for some explanation of the clue. Perhaps you would be good enough to spell out for me please how you arrived at the removal of the 'iastes' from the name of the biblical book?

Listen carefully I shall say this only once more. Eccles appears as part of another word so that answers the clue. End of story Have a nice day

Well, basically I thought of towns around the Greater Manchester area with six letters. I thought of books of the Bible and matched Eccles . I’m assuming the ‘that appears’ bit was meant to mean or was inferring a part of the word (Eccles iastic).
