Before my husband died he left me instructions on how to use various garden equipment. Specifically he told me to use sp98 for the ride on mower. However, there's not a drop to be had at the pumps. Can I use sp95 and just not tell him , or will it damage the engine.

Yes, les greves. I'll try sp95 and hope he's not looking down. Thanks to you all.

I think SP98 is 5% bioethanol and 95 is 10%. If I'm right then you can use the 95 but should get 98 when you can because the bioethanol can affect seals and gaskets in older machinery.
I'm quite happy for anyone who knows better to tell me that's nonsense.

It's strange. We have access to 2 SuperU stations. One to the north has every grade and no restrictions. The one south only has diesel and 95. There is about 20 minutes between them.

Most petrol engines from 2006 (I think) including mowers etc should run on either but you can also belt and brace it by using a fuel additive every so often, in the UK it used to be called Redex just a squirt now and then protects the seals as ethanol is corrosive to rubber.

What year and make is your ride on mower? If you know the engine type and HP (often printed on the very top fan casing) all the better.
Without that it is hard to advise, even SP98 has had sufficient ethanol content for many years to have caused a problem if it were going to.

Redex was an upper cylinder lubricant back in the bad old days when it did actually help the poorly machined & designed engines of the day, that Red Line racing lube does zero to protect non ethanol compatible seals and fuel hoses against hardening and degradation, none of the snake oils do, if the fuel system components are old enough to suffer the effects of ethanol then they should be replaced, even on SP98 its likely they would have caused problems by now if they were going to.

I think everyone has focused on ethanol when the key point might be that SP98 has a higher octane number than SP95. Using SP95 may just make the engine run rough (aka pinking). Unless the machine is very old, I would actually doubt that it would but lots of people did and probably still think that there is some wonderful benefit from the high octane fuel in normal modern engines.

I doubt seriously that petrol octane rating is any sort of an issue on low compression garden equipment motors. They are not high compression sophisticated devices like a lean burn Porche.

Not a chance in hell of pre-ignition even if running on E85.
It definitely would not have been a key point to Mangetouts late husband.
