Having worked/lived in many countries around the globe I never thought it was the UK government's obligation to rescue me. My company made us devise plans to activate should it become necessary. On one occasion there was an attempted coup d'etat and several hundred military personel, very well armed, took over the hotel/residence I and my team was in demanding the government resign. Our plan was activated, the plan worked well and thankfully no serious problem came about. Uk government was not called upon - nor any other countries of my team members.

The question should be . Why are these British citizens in Sudan? The answer is usually to make money , by working for a British company You have absolutely no idea why they are there. Work? Visiting family? Diplomats? Holidaymakers? Charity workers? That is why I posed the question . Also Sudanese with British passports will obviously want to get out ASAP.

Quite a nice sound. Governments need to be made to listen from time to time.

1500 airlifted out so far. Not bad. How many left I wonder? Perhaps the Germans will be the last!

Why for goodness sake would a person want to escape France to get to the UK? The young French have been doing so for 50 years or more but as far as the French in general you will have to show us the facts

Why for goodness sake would a person want to escape France to get to the UK? The young French have been doing so for 50 years or more but as far as the French in general you will have to show us the facts That's an interesting point .. many young people study English at school and see a good knowledge of it as being career/life enhancing. Years ago the UK used to be the first choice of country for many to continue their studies or find a job. It was close by and they might have spent a week there with a family whilst at school.
But the number who choose the UK has been declining for a long time. When I was talking with students in English during English Week at their University, as I regularly used to do, I noticed that the shift changed from opting for the UK to the US and to English-speaking Canada, New Zealand and Australia. Covid intervened and I gave up doing this but I doubt the UK will have regained popularity.

Sorry. I forgot the quotation marks. No matter how hard I try I can’t seem to loose this English trait of making a joke of everything. Black humour is not all that the English stole from the Irish. All aid has strings attached. I can’t help my skepticism either.

And just to blow cernunnos 's emigrant theory out of the water - or at least cause it to list a great deal - it seems many of those now being repatriated had gone to visit their families in Sudan to celebrate Eid for the end of Ramadan. This includes NHS doctors who were working under a work visa and now cannot get UK help to get back to work because they are not British passport holders.
