Just been to Delbrand large garden centre chain, bought five identical pot plants, so said cinq, they where all in the same pots the same plant just different colours, she scanned each one but made a mistake, she did this four times, these were large plants, so she had to come from behind the counter to scan them on the trolly, I had lifted one onto the desk for her to scan, so I thought scan this one five times job done, what on earth is the education system coming to. Shudder to think what would have happened if I paid in cash and needed some change. Rant over

It is possible that different pot colours mean that the items are recorded as different SKUs and so although the price is the same, for stock control reasons it may be essential that each item is scanned.
It may be that it does not apply to your plants but staff are instructed to scan everything because some items in the centre do have to be stock controlled at that level.

Bricodepot do the same thing it could be part of the training program. Generally checkout staff do not have degrees.

The pots where the same colours just the plants that are different shades, I do shop a fair bit at Brico and at Super U they will scan one item and they put the amount of said item on the screen, the girl has been there at least six months she was very pleasant as we was to her, so probably the way they train the staff.

I suppose it depends on whom you compare them with ? I must be pretty thick too, I don't get worked up about minor details ! Specialy not in Delbard

When load my trailer at Brico D. I am careful to do it in such a way to make it easy to count the items, knowing that even though I tell the checker how many there are she will invariably not trust me and insist on counting them herself. The last time it was a neat stack of decking boards. After she did her own count, and I paid, I read the ticket and she had cocked up the count. I got five of them for free! The same mindset when buying a large stack of storage crates. After counting them (easily done) she insisted on undoing every one to look inside to make sure I hadn't hidden something else between them.. This process must be part of the training because it is clearly a pain in the butt to the cashiers. Is it because there are so many thieves in France that "shrinkage" is out of control? I don't think many of us from UK or elsewhere are used to being thought of as potential shoplifters. I find it mildly offensive.

My misunderstanding. If the plants were different colours in that case they will almost certainly be different SKUs and will need to be individually scanned. To take a more obvious case Gamm Vert sell "aromatiques" at 2.95 per pot. I chose 6 pots and go to the till. If the hostess just scans 1 and then says 6 items, the price will be right but their stock control system will say 6 thymes sold. In fact I bought 1 thyme, 1 Strawberry mint, 1 apple mint, 1lovage, 1 chives and 1 large leaf parsley. So they restock on thyme that they don't need and potentially run out of the others. If your hostess had to scan the items several times that might point to training, or a dodgy scanner or even dodgy software.

The cashiers at Lidl clearly think we're potential shoplifters as they always ask to see the inside of our bags before letting us pass the till, I wouldn't mind if they did this for every customer but they don't.

I show my bags in advance without being asked.(Not in Lidl as I don't shop there). No problem. Thieves will ultimately reflect in the prices we have to pay.

There are those who might suggest it is because of your accent. (certainly not me, mate)

LOL= two Lidl stores within 20 minutes of us, one small one in Pluduno been there for years and staff do check card board boxes of wine bottles, which with the vast price differences in price, someone could take advantage. The other, a newer store in Lamballe and you are treated as a common criminal, apart from a 6x2litre pack of 25cent a bottle water, everything else has to be on the conveyor, empty bags held upside down to show empty and I have a convenient 12 bottle carrier bag and all contents, even if clearly all the same are scrutinized. I asked a friend and she explained that the one in Lamballe is targeted by the "traveller" community that live near buy who have given up shoplifting and petty theft, arriving 10+ strong, men, women and children just grabbing what they want and running out of the store to waiting white vans...

Oh goodness, how dreadful .. and terrifying for anyone in their path. Lidl are certainly a victim of their own success in that particular store.

Getting back to the original thread. I think youngsters are very useful. Can't work out how to use the phone or the TV? Confused when using your tablet or pc? Ask a 5 year old!!!
As for being asked to show your bags are empty at the supermarket payout - they ask everyone, not just the English. No discrimination as far as I can tell.

I doubt it will have occurred to the whiners that if shoplifting is reduced then prices can be held lower.
Or if you want to be a cynical whiner, if shoplifting increases prices will certainly go up.
