Very interesting discussion. I am with CF. I have a few questions about Wise which I hope can be answered by the knowledgeable members on this thread. Is the card a debit card and is it accepted everywhere? Can you use the card for online transactions and what is the security checking process?
Thanks in advance of your advice. I can see the card as one strong element in favour of Wise

Has most of the info you need there Lurcher, its pretty much a normal debt card, i havn't tried it at fuel stations where a pre auth amount is usually taken, so some cards don't work at fuel stations, but someone here may have used it at a fuel station?

I can see the card as one strong element in favour of Wise Yes the card is a debit card and I’ve used mine in places such as Singapore, Sydney and Alicante as well as all over France. Have also used it online for paying our French water and electricity bills. For me the security process was relatively straightforward, did have to send a photo of me holding my passport to prove it was really me. Take the plunge, millions of us can’t be wrong!?

"They are not a bank or part of the financial services compensation scheme which protects the first £85,000 of any UK deposits.
That’s what is not to like."
The topic is Currencyfair vs Wise, neither are part of the FCS compensation scheme.

The security checks for my French bank debit card when I use it to buy goods online require me to enter my secret code. Then I wait for a telephone message contains a second code which I then include in the payment form on my device such as an iPad, laptop or smart phone. Is this the same procedure with Wise?

No. If you are using the card to buy online and it requires a “security check “ it will ask you to approve it in the Wise app. I have the app on both my phone and my iPad for just those occasions.

I've just registered with Wise and am finding it far from easy to navigate. In the alphabetical list of countries United Kingdom comes between Gamba and Granada. That's not my problem but it hasn't helped my spinning head. I've sent in all my docs now setting up transfer of funds from UK to France but I seem to have put UK bank as receiving bank for my euros. Could some kind soul please walk me through this by PM?

I've fixed the above problem but now wanting to transfer funds to Wise, the only details they supply is their address. No IBAN to be found. My bank requires IBAN to transfer funds, don't they all? I would really have given up by now if I didn't need the money soonish.

Sorry to drag this back to the top but would you be able to report back on how it finished. Is it all working now? Thanks.

Sorry to drag this back to the top but would you be able to report back on how it finished. Is it all working now? Thanks. I meant to do that but I was exhausted! Yes, worked well in the end. The euros were in my account almost instantly once my UK bank had accepted the transaction wasn't fraudulent.* Some of my difficulties were of my own making - having been with Currency Fair for so many years I could go through their procedure on automatic so I struggled with a new way of doing things. One thing that wasn't my fault and was really unhelpful was the location of FAQs. Not signposted anywhere but eventually found them under my account details! The other thing was difficulties with ID which someone mentioned above. I sent copy of my passport early on which was accepted but then later had to send a photo of me holding my passport. First effort was rejected so I had to re-do and resubmit. *Shortly after setting up transaction with UK bank I had an email to say I needed to contact their fraud department urgently. After surmounting several obstacles, I managed to convince them I was not making the payment under duress. Unfortunately this took longer than the 2 hours Wise were holding my exchange rate for so I lost out.

lurcher if you're thinking of changing to Wise, it would be a good idea to contact your bank in advance to let them know. Apart from losing money because of the time lapse, the procedure for convincing my bank it was a genuine transaction was quite gruelling (but necessary).

I thought it was me. I have found it far from easy after being with CF for so many years. Am still negotiating the path.
