I haven't Nifty but I have just (yesterday) finished listening to Bill Bryson's Notes From A Small Island, it is free to listen to on Audible, I had a three month £1 a month trial, which I have really enjoyed, the book I listened to, I had read in the late 90's and it covers a trip he made around the UK prior to his return to the US but if you are recommending this other book I will download it. Audible is perfect for listening in the car connected by bluetooth.
Edit- I have looked at some of the reviews on Audible, it has 4 stars but there are some negative reviews mainly his grumpiness and negative attitude towards the UK, it is also £7.99 or 1 credit, which I don't have.

Notes from a small Island was my first introduction to Bryson about ten years ago. It struck a very solid blow to me personally, having had so many similar experiences and reactions to British culture when I first arrived in 1970. I started to realise there was very little in common between life in England and life in California apart from language. Uphill learning curve (struggle) for the first few years. I think they call it culture shock. I experienced it again when coming here in 2001, but far less troublesome and much easier to get used to.
If people "get" Bill Bryson's humour they would enjoy most of his other books. Worth searching them out.

I like his style and have read most of his books.. I wish I could cp just one page of TRTLD. It is very wry. perhaps I read more than most into what I read as I am familiar with a lot of the area’s he writes about. Particulaly when he worked as a nurse in a mental hospital, because I know the area where he worked well, and, I worked for the Mental Health Services of Australia, so perhaps have more insight in that field than the average person.

Bill Bryson used to write in the Mail on Sunday supplement, it was always the first thing I read after the headlines and sport.
