That's interesting, PE. I did wonder where it's all leading, as more and more people try to become self-sufficient. Might have known

We get inundated with phone calls selling Solar power. Only problem is we are close to a historic monument so, even if we wanted to put panels on the roof, we couldn’t!

There's a lot to be said for having an array on the ground, if you've got the space. No planning permission required, easy maintenance etc.

We were keen to have solar panels installed, hoping to have lower energy costs but also because we have grandchildren, whose future concerns us very much, so it seemed a step in the right direction of being more ‘green’.
We responded to various companies’ adverts and had two round to discuss having panels on the roof and to quote. The company we preferred then informed us that the roofing felt would have to be replaced as it was in a poor condition. We called in Mr Lamb, the roofer who has done work for us for years, who looked at the roofing felt and said that of course it wasn't in a good condition, it was 70 years old but it didn’t really need replacing for panels to be fitted.
However, if we wanted it done, the roof tiles would have to be removed, new roofing felt put in and tiles replaced - costing about £10,000, which would nearly double the cost of the panels.
So that was that - no solar panels on our roof! However I’d heard of the Ripple Energy cooperative and after more investigation, I decided to invest in their third wind farm in Devon (1 is already up and running and our SIL invested init, unbeknown to us), although later it was decided to install solar panels instead, so we have invested in solar panels after all.

Our saga continues....we wanted a shade pergola on the terrace that would accommodate enough panels for our auto-consommation needs in summer. After trying to get quotes from 4 local charpentiers to construct a pergola to traditional design (back in January) we ended up with one quote from a business in the village that was going bankrupt. Not a good start, and wanting silly money. The two solar panel installers that came to quote both insisted on roof installation, which we didn't want, given the fragile state of the existing top tiles! So...Plan B was to get a quote for replacement of the old 'chapeau' top tiles, redoing all the mortar at the same time, and going with roof-mounted panels. Devis received and signed in March. Not a glimmer of a sniff since of a charpentier actually starting work. Vive la France....

Nothing to do with France, to do with the contract . Why do you live in France if you dislike it soooooo much ? said with a laugh!

I think that it has everything to do with France. It's a mindset. Especially in this area. French friends agree that it's become much, much worse since the Covid confinements. I live in France because there's simply no other country I could/would live in. Despite it's failings. Said seriously.
