It's an insult to the Mustang. As the new Mini is an insult to the original. And all the new "retro" products are just a badge of the originals that had proper character. One exception. The reborn Fiat 500 is not all that bad in style anyway.

If its not got a big block V8 then its not a proper Mustang, always fancied one, the "Mach 1" was the 70s muscle car, still available 70K+ V8 460 Bhp.

The reborn Fiat 500 is not all that bad in style anyway. It looks nice but very tight for space on the inside, I tried sitting in one.

The Mini was also tight for space inside. BMW reincarnated it in much larger form and totally spoiled it. The Fiat, like the Mini, was intended to be a "peoples car" not an expensive pastische of a classic.

@ Aardvark: the original number one and the new VW Beetle a second place?

The new beetle was recognisable as a modernised version and as a "retro" design I give it 8 out of 10 but costwise it is certainly not a "Peoples car".
I am surprised that Citroen didn't throw their hat in the ring with an updated version of the 2cv. A missed opportunity in my view. There were so many styling cues that could have been exploited.
Even the ill-fated Chrysler PT Cruiser was a good effort. A shame unreliability issues eventually caused its demise. There was a very tidy one with a broken engine for sale cheap a few years back and I would have jumped at the chance to put a better (different) engine in it to put it back on the road but sadly engine swapping and major modifications are prohibited in France. That's one thing I prefer about UK. Build what you want, in keeping with the requirements of Construction & Use regs, get an engineer's report and if it passes an MOT you're good to go. My party trick was to shoehorn a V8 into pretty much any rear wheel drive vehicle you brought me.
The anonymous design brief today churns out grey crumpled looking computers on wheels, way too high for their own good, with no distinctive styling persona it is no wonder designs of previous decades are so sought after and punitively expensive.

Can't beat that feeling you get from a four-in-hand as long as they are properly prepared by the stable maid.
