Not seen or heard any southbound this year, I know there is a West and East corridor that they use, we are on the West side, so perhaps they are on the Eastern side.

Due to the warm South wind the migration hasn't really started yet ,just a few cranes are on the move. You can follow it on the LPO site.

I saw about 20 flying SW yesterday. Unusually, they were completely silent.

I've heard them over the last few days but not seen them due to cloud cover.

They need a following wind , try flying 1000km or more against the wind.

I'm not even going to try 100m against what's blowing out there at the moment

We've had wind literally doing 180 turns today. Any grues up there today would have been flapping like mad just to stay still.

Yet there was some sort of raptor (big but with a sparrowhawk-like tail) swooping gracefully over the next door field as though it was a mere light breeze

Do you happen to know whether they attack chickens, spectrum?

A high-speed hunter that effortlessly weaves through its woodland home, the goshawk can take a wide variety of prey. Common food includes other birds, such as wood pigeons, corvids (members of the crow family) and game birds. Squirrels, rabbits and other mammals are also regularly taken.

Do you happen to know whether they attack chickens, spectrum ? Could do as said above capable of taking rabbits, also could be the aptly named Hen Harrier, once watched one hunting in afield about quarter of a mile away through binoculars, a magnificent sight as long as you are not a rabbit. Also in the same field different day had the honour of watching a Short-Toed Eagle doing battle with a snake, only one winner.

Well Oven Ready, my handicappée, had better keep under cover then! Bless her, she's had a dislocated hip for about a year now, but she trundles around with the others, quite happy and healthy apart from the limp. She can't run, though, so a sitting duck (ha!) for predators.

Oh I am sorry, cernunnos. Can't imagine life without the girls. Will you get some more and start afresh when the survivors are gone? It's easier than trying to introduce new ones to old ones, isn't it?
