The main concern amongst Brits in France seems to be where children and step-children are involved, especially when the couple would rather leave them out of the equation . We've not got that headache, but I do deeply resent the French tax inheritance laws. Whether I outlive OH or not, I don't have the option of bequeathing my assets where I want them to go without the beneficiaries being lumbered with a swingeing tax bill. Not only are Assurances Vie impractical if you can't or don't want to tie up your money, but they're subject to charges now, as well. As for making gifts during your lifetime, how on earth can you know how long you'll be around, and what you'll need for your own future? It's simply not right.

We passed on the whole estate to the kids some years ago. We live in the place as fruit users or some such name. We pay all the bills etc and maintain everything. Had to pay off some inheritance tax which was not too bad and would be a lot more if left till we pop the clogs. We had a kind notarie who sold us the house and used a low value due to the condition of the buildings when assessing the tax etc. It kept each share below a certain value so that the tax was reasonable.

Not easy to disinherit , best way is to spend it before you die ! easier then you are led to believe.
