It would be better to do away with the system of "gongs" altogether. However it would only be replaced with some other system and so the bullshit continues I do so agree that reform is necessary but I would equally countenance some caution. Having an elected upper house has its attractions but runs a risk of simply mirroring the government in power or perhaps worse, as has happened in the US for quite a few elections, people vote for one party for the lower house and the other for the upper. Result: stalemate where the important things don't get done. Further, the current mix - for all its faults has a significant number of non-aligned members. These might perhaps be considered as representing the 30%+ of the electorate who don't vote - for good or bad reasons. Additionally there are members who bring specific skills to government - lawyers, health experts etc.. I wonder for example whether someone like Dame Tanni Grey Thompson who does much for the rights of those with different abilities, would get voted in against a Lab:Con contest.

The whole system is wrong , too much money oriented , it will eventually fail.

The whole system is wrong , too much money oriented , it will eventually fail. The whole system may be wrong but that’s how it’s always been and will remain so until a better system is found. Labour are no different, at least three of their top fundraisers are Labour peers ie David Sainsbury, Michael Levy and Waheed Alli. C’est la vie…

Many many suggestions , but I don't really think any will help the situation that is the result of years of mismanagement. At my age , I am happy that I made the evaluation of the direction that mankind was moving in ( and still are) when I was young and took my own precautions. One suggestion ( that will never happen ) would be to close stock markets, to stop making money out of nothing !

What would happen if the stock markets were closed ? Champagne sales would be down and one would find it difficult to sell your flippin shares.😀

yes , it would be a major change for one's living standards and the money could be used to improve companies and work rather than skimming.

It would be just a tad more than a major change to living standards. Every company and private pension relies on the share markets. So you would be reduced to the government OAP. Not sure if state workers' pensions come directly from taxation or whether they too have monies invested.
It would also have a knock-on impact into government finances since many pensioners would fall out of the income bands where income tax is applied and quite probably some would then fall into the groups that require additional financial support from the government.
Then add in the loss of tax income from capital gains and the government have a lot less coming in and potentially quite a bit more going out.

So basically a complete mess? As I noted above , will never happen ! Really then, the only thing that is left is a major breakdown of society and back to survival of the fittest?
