Can someone help me with Paypal, please. I haven't used it for a very long time but remember that when I did, I ended up paying in £ from my French bank account so it was an expensive mistake. How can I make sure they take money from my UK Coop account?

You have to register the UK card with Paypal and then chose it for the payment. It may well be that Paypal defaults to your French card and you will have to tick the chose a different card option.

That is excellent advice. Before you try to pay, login to your PayPal account and add a new card in your method of payment. It will then be possible to choose the new card as your default card. When you buy something the UK card should be offered as the starting point for payment.

A very interesting thread. I have a Paypal account that was set up by a friend ages ago. The Paypal purchases come out of my French bank account. Since most of my online purchases are from UK sellers would I be better off registering a UK bank card with Paypal? Does this save money somehow? When I buy from Amazon (that doesn't accept Paypal) at the checkout I am offered the choice of paying in ££s or €€s. Which would be the sensible choice?

If you are paying in pounds with a Euro card, somewhere you will be paying exchange fees*, so if you have a UK£ account it makes sense to pay with that.
* It might be with the Paypal exchange rate or it might be when the charge (in pounds) arrives with your Euro card issuer.

A word of caution.
If paying someone you don't know beware of paying using Friends and Family because with that you have no protection if something goes wrong or it's a scam.
Scammers advertise things for sale which they don't actually have and say to save Paypal fees pay by F&F, you pay and the goods never show up, it's a very common con.

Since most of my online purchases are from UK sellers would I be better off registering a UK bank card with Paypal? Does this save money somehow? Yes, when I worked out the exchange rate that Paypal had used for my UK purchase paid for from my French bank account, I felt I'd been fleeced! Hence my question. I don't know why I had difficulty registering my UK card with Paypal in the past as I found it quite simple yesterday. I'm sure you'll find it straightforward but if you need help, just ask. Forgot to say that when you register a new card, as I did yesterday, Paypal will take 2 small amounts from your account to verify. Just checked and this was 1p and 2p so not a worry.

Some years ago I had my UK debit and credit cards registered with my French Paypal account. When my old UK credit card expired Paypal wouldn't let me add the new one, saying Paypal has to be country specific regarding your bank accounts and cards because of the differing regulations of each country. Or something like that!!
So, either they've changed their rules or they are allowing people to register a card from another country but only up to that card's expiry date.

Very flummoxed this evening as I've just confirmed my UK bank card with Paypal. It said OK, do you want to use this card as your first choice card? When I said yes, it said not possible! Now I find there are special charges for international transactions. It's not as straightforward as I thought. I'm a bit lost at the moment. Will have another look in the morning when I feel fresher. Disappointed.

Get a Wise account.
Load it with Euros from your French bank, concert to £ in the app, add your recipient's IBAN and pay them.
Easy peasey!

There are many situations where the seller either only uses PayPal or perhaps a bank card. They do not have the facility to accept bank transfers. This thread has raised some good information about the assorted limitations of payments.
