I would have said Belle de Jour. Apparently that's yet another name for them. These put on a great show. I didn't know mirabilis can be an annual or perennial. The Belle de Jour I know is an annual. I saved some seeds last year and put them in a seed tray this spring then forgot about them. Sadly they resented this neglect and refused to grow. They're now still 4 inches tall whereas my friend has a lovely plant full of colour from the seeds allowed to drop in the garden soil. There's a lesson there.  |

If they get a long enough growing season, they form tubers like a dahlia and become reliably perennial. I've only got two shades of pink, but if anyone wants seed, feel free to PM me :-)

There was an old tale of the lady who brought this plant to Valbonne.. It spread like fire in california and they kicked her out of the village... To this day, in every crack or exposed soil they sprout..
(e) The US considers it an invasive plant species (/e)

They flower in yellow as well. The seeds are massive, the size of peas, and germinate really easily. You can grow them in borders or large pots.

Tant pis! Given the extremes of climate, personally I'm grateful for several 'invasive' species that survive here. Ditto several toxic plants, like Ricinus.
