IMO history should be used as a teaching tool rather than a stick to beat yourself with. In the 21st century slavery and colonialism is rightly seen as abhorrent so I get why there are calls to remove statues etc which honour slave traders, however at some point a line in the sand does have to be drawn otherwise we'll never move on from the past. Very true. Sadly, there are many that seem unable to accept that they are citizens of a country with a prolonged history of lethal colonialism. Even worse, blame the oppressed for resisting their oppressor.

True, but where is the line now? There seems to be people here who think that what went on in the past was the "right" thing to do. It depends on upbringing I think. Too educated (sorry, stupid) to realise they were, and I'm being polite here, the privileged. Sad for you to think that you are better than others even born in the same country than you. NB odds on that you are British, but hey I'am guessing, lived elsewhere with parents during your formative period. If not, then please explain.

Not quite sure what you need me to explain or expand upon Grumpyish, in my view you can never change history only learn from it which is what JSKS was saying and is also something I totally agree with.

My issue is that history is viewed/written depending on how an individual has benefited from it.
Isn't it true that history is written from the point of view of the victors or perhaps those that gained most from the losers.
The line in the sand is really dependant on where your (or your offspings) futures lie as well!
That is where the problem lies, as perhaps people do not understand or learn from "written facts".
Quotes on purpose.
Perhaps I can shout this when I learn how.

Have I personally benefited from the UK's colonial past, who can say. I've traced my ancestors back to the 1500's and at that time they were peasants working for the local landowner with no chance of ever improving their lives. On the other hand, just being a citizen of the UK in the 21st century now defers instant privilege to some degree because of the wealth the country has accumulated over the last 400/500 years by fair means or foul.
Should I feel guilty for that?

Yes you should. Same issue with me really.
History, in whoevers eyes cannot be changed. But sorry if you think that your relatives 500 year ago are relevant now, in my eyes anyway.
Sod royalty!

Perhaps you could explain why I should feel guilt for the privilege that has (by default) been bestowed on me purely because of the country I was born in.

You are living in the past.
No point in discussing with you both.
The westernised guy who has fled to UAE is still seeking power.
How much gold does he want?

You are living in the past. No point in discussing with you both. I thought we were having a sensible discussion so that is disappointing.

Can I have the last word. As woolybanana said - thats bollocks now. A finely judged and nuanced response

Why is Nifty resurrecting such old posts? Time to browse these could best be spent conducting a debate on today's issues. like where did I put my socks? or what two ways are there to teach your granny to use her false teeth?

Because I want to know what others think about a particular subject
Why do you ask PE?
