After having spent all day trying to remove Lily of the Valley from amongst our raspberry and blackberry beds, that's the worst weed in our garden by a long chalk. It has a mat of roots very close to the surface and sends up new growth from joints in the roots. A real bitch to remove. Had to use an adge to make any progress.

Ooooo too much choice! The couch grass has had a hammering, two in fact, so might be vanquished for a couple of years. Bind weed banished from the veg plot and orchard, so it's moved into the flower borders instead. Docks, Datura and various grasses that came in with bought topsoil. The horsetail fern that creeps in from the adjacent field. 'Wildflowers' pfffffftt!

Oh, I would love some Lily of the Valley. I bought a clump a couple of years back but it didn't survive. If it grows like a weed in your garden I seriously can't have green fingers! lol

Dandelions were a pain, but with several years of attack - deflowering and uprooting as far as possible - it is on the decline. We have another weed which is a bit like yarrow but I am not sure that is what it is that tries to spread throughout the meadow areas and from there into the veggie beds but that is at least being kept in check. Like JohnnyD bindweed is a bit of a problem and a real pain in the asparagus beds where deep digging to eradicate it is not an option.
But the real thug of the garden is.......................
................. oregano. Self seeds everywhere, sends out stems sideways that when they bend down to the ground quickly root and sends out underground runners. I would estimate that about a quarter of our "grassed" area is now oregano with thyme running a close second for taking over.
At least mowing a a pleasant experience for the nose.

I was thinking that! Bet it smells lovely when walked on too

We make our own compost so I suspect that is the cause. I now take lifted plants to the tip. It loves dry, sandy soil so if you have clay soil then that's why it didn't survive.

Liky of the valley spreads like weeds in my garden but we’re on clay soil. It took several years of digging to eradicate it from a border in the back garden and it’s still got quite a hold in the front garden amongst shrubs which I had gravelled over, having spread from our neighbour’s garden. I love the smell of lily of the valley, but would prefer to have only a small amount kept in bounds like mint.

Depending on the surrounding land, I think that if the field was heavily grazed by goats, sheep or cattle then that will cause the loss of broad leaved species. we have some land that was basically supporting plantains twenty years ago. After years of grazing it produces good hay.

I always thought our problem was related to soil type, but obviously not. It's a damned nuisance. I have a similar problem with bluebells, or perhaps they are Spanish bells as their heads stand up straight unlike bluebells. Same goes for evening primrose, digitalis and that other little blighter lemon balm. But as my husband says, they're all free so don't complain!

You can still use "Verdone" to kill broad leaved weeds in grass.

Because it is deep rooted, this noxious plant has survived the drought of recent years when other plants and grasses have suffered. It has an active season lasting many months and seeds prolifically. It was taking hold in our paddocks and we were acutely aware of the risk to the horses, so embarked on a long hard course of action which has been a labour of love. For two years we had the local farmer spray with 2,3-d (a selective broad leaf herbicide which does not kill grass) when the weeds were most active (around June/July - whenever he could fit us in). We divided the paddock and took the horses off the sprayed area for 3 weeks before the other half was sprayed. That killed off the plants which were above ground, but of course there were millions of seeds underground ready to germinate. In the meantime I topped the stems at least weekly with a tractor mower before the plants could seed. In addition I spent hours digging them out. I still spend hours digging them out - every day when the weather allows. Finally after about 7 years, we are reaping the benefits. Friends' paddocks are almost a carpet of cat's ear and they are now in awe of ours!
