We are looking for house insurance for our (soon to be) second home in Creuse and would appreciate any tips regarding price differences between companies. Also experiences with payouts and bureaucracy when claims are necessary.
Thanks in advance, Helen

For ease when we arrived we took out house/content insurance with our Bank (Banque Pop) .. many people seem to do this. They seem to win accolades for their cover/premiums/client service. Though now we're with Groupama. Cannot say about claiming as, touch wood, we have never had cause to make a claim.

Yes they do, and live to regret it. Rather than take the easy option, shop around with town centre assurance brokers, online, or direct options. For every satisfied bank insurance customer there are postings from several people claiming it was a nightmare. And there are online comparison sites to make it a bit easier.

Insured with Axa (definitely not the cheapest) and did suffer a serious claim when a valve on the water heater (top floor) failed and flooded the house.
It took them 5 weeks to send out the loss adjuster but he agreed to our estimates of the loss without question. [ I had professional experience of dealing with loss adjusters so that may have smoothed things.] We asked about potential damage to the kitchen units but he said they would not replace a good kitchen. 10 years on and the woodwork - ie mdf and chipboard - is now showing belated signs of distress, so that is one regret since there is no chance of going back.

Why would you think that? Or even ask that?

You will find that wherever you go.
I was insured with xxx - followed by a tirade of why they were let down. Often because they did not read the conditions. I did and realised that the contents insurance that automatically came with the property was woefully low - €8k IIRC - so I increased it and had no problems with our claim when we were flooded. If it had been still at the original I too could have had a tirade.

So is my CA insurance pants then? Can't say about yours, but mine certainly was. Fingers crossed for you. On second thought, it was most likely my CA bank that gave the whole experience such a bad outcome.

We used a comparison site and lived to regret it.....got deluged with junk calls, junk email, junk sms. And since they were the only thing we had used our real phone number for it had to be them. Never again.

So maybe now you know not to give out your main email address willy nilly and your phone number into the bargain. You can get any number of free email addresses these days. Use it to get access to something or to register on a website. You main and personal address is kept private. I don't get more than a mega-tiny amount of email spam and I suspect most of that is random generated judging by the subject matter. I use a call blocker on my landline and it interupts the caller to ask for I.D. before it is either allowed to ring or told to F-off. Not had a single cold caller or scammer on the landline for many years. Don't have a mobile switched on unless it is needed and the number doesn't get handed out to all and sundry. Just the bank and Transferwise.
Simple precautions to avoid the aggro that comes with modern communications technology.
