A friend has just telephoned. She used her French bank card (CA) at 14.10 in her local Lidl. When she got home to use it tobuy something on line she didnt have it. She could have dropped it when she put it back in her holder so didnt do it properly. Anyway to cut a long story short, when she realised she hadnt got it, she notified her bank and also went into online banking. Less than 15 mins after she used it someone had taken out 900 euros in one transaction. from an ATM She can only withdraw 300 euros per day!!!!!! Her bank have blocked it and she is seeing them and the gendarmes tomorrow - can anyone throw any light on why this sort of thing can happen

Well if its CA anything can happen, I had a lot of money taken out over multiple transactions, but it was a brand new card sent by post and I had not even registered it either at the bank or online I filled all the paperwork in and it took them about four weeks to refund the loss. On line at it says that the bank has to refund within 24hrs if there is no suspect of fraud, I hope she gets all her money back.

If the daily limit on the card for an ATM is 300€, how on earth could the thief withdraw three times that amount?

Stood behind her as she entered the PIN in her supermarket transaction. It's so easy to work out someone's code even from a distance. Contactless helps eliminate the opportunity.
