How old should a person be when they take on a new dog? Say you were mid ‘70s, like bigger dogs, how old could one be to take on a new dog? What about refuges, are the dogs problems? I have small grandchildren so am nervous and drive a fair bit, mainly with dog.

Wooly this is a problem we 'older' members often face so there is no easy answer.
Been there, done that, only our 'rescue' was an elderly cat.
Hopefully you will receive some helpful replies.
In the meantime it might help if you could add where you live to your profile; so if posters want to offer advice and/or mention some places/refuges they know of, then they can mention ones which are close/closeish to you.

Thanks sue in56; Pas de Calais but can drive to fetch, good size garden, food good some walking but not a fanatic. Like a dog that relates and enjoys a cuddle, not too small, good listener, not too hairy. Like the one I lost about ten months ago. I still have his little mate but he is failing. Must speak or be able to learn English and be good with kids! Oh and be able to sleep late in the mornings!

Close to the end of their lives both my mother and father in law expressed regret that they had decided not to have a new pet. For both of them they actually lived long enough after the previous pet had died for it not to be an issue, but even if they hadn’t we constantly said we would care for any pets left behind.
I feel sorry about it as it would have given them so much pleasure, and walking a dog might have extended their lives too.
make sure you have a plan B for the pet. But if it is something that would add to your life then don’t let your age put you off.

Unless you're on your last legs, or suffering with something specific, mid-70s is no age to stop adopting animals (well, young cats perhaps, or parrots ...): there's plenty of life in the woolybanana yet, I imagine. And having a dog will keep you active, give you a purpose to get up and get out each day.

I have small grandchildren so am nervous and drive a fair bit, mainly with dog. Bigger dogs are more likely to suffer from lack of exercise so maybe compromise is in order there. Refuge dogs problems? I wouldn't have a dog from any other source. Our little fella came from a Refuge and hasn't been an ounce of trouble from day one. He came perfectly trained to go outside, he doesn't chew the furniture, and is very affectionate. He only ever barks a little to let us know there is someone at the door for a delivery and completely ignores the chickens. He understands he has to stay within the boundary of the garden (not fenced) and is happy to eat whatever we give him. I'm sure he appreciates living with us. Fauve de Bretagne with a bit of Jack Russel.

Indeed, the setter in Jesse Stone is amazing. So were the storylines, the music and the location.
