I have an old Kindle with no light. Can read it in sunlight. Turn it on it works instantly
I also have a Fire 7 which I can read in the dark. Turn it on and wait ages to boot, wait again for Kindle book to come up....then read at last!

I had my first ereader (a French one) back in about 2002 when sony was trying to capture the market. I have since replaced it with a kindle paperwhite, mrs PE has the paperwhite with a backlight for early morning non- sleepy reading. Best things going, ideal in waiting rooms, adjustable font sizes, millions of books. I use Amazon.com (USA) for books as they have many box sets for $1 all easy read send you to sleep stuff.

I have had a paperwhite for a number of years. It is fantastic and the best value bit of IT that I have bought. I use it every day and it has travelled the world with me. I regularly have 15 books or more on it

Thank you to everyone who responded.
The consensus seeed to be that the Kindle Paperwhite is the most convenient and comfortable model, so I've gone with that and ordered one which should arrive on Saturday. No doubt I'll then firstly have to do all knds of things which I shan't understand in order for the thing to work and secondly begin the fun bit of downloading books.

Excellent (did you choose the backlit one or the plain one?).
You should find it is registered to your account when it arrives, and so relatively little fiddling about will be necessary.

Thank you for the reassurance. I think I have ordered the backlit one - definitely it was the no advertisements version.

About the only thing you'll need to do is connect it to your WiFi.
