Anyone know the rules on me taking back 40 litres of diesel in 2.x 20 litre fuel containers, I want enough to be able to get back to Portsmouth from home when the current situation worsens……..I would rather stay here, but I think it’s going to get worse and don’t want to use up our 90 in 180 until it’s really bad…….

I’m no expert on ferries but Google might be your friend..
For example googling “Brittany Ferries fuel in loose tanks “ came up with this from that company’s FAQs:
”Passengers travelling with a vehicle may carry petrol or diesel up to the total amount of 5 litres per vehicle. It must be in a sealed canister designed specifically for carrying fuel.”

We was thinking of a quick trip back next month but have put it off until next year, for this reason.

As I've been too busy with my new kitten I haven't seen or heard any news about petrol/diesel.
On FB they are talking about a shortage in the UK, is it going to get bad in France as well? What is causing it?
JonnyD I will ask my husband as he works on ferries.
edited to add: one of the questions that they ask at border control is "do you have any petrol/diesel" as you are not allowed to carry it in fuel containers.
Fill up in France before you depart Caen is your best bet

What is causing it? Long term the claim is a shortage of suitably qualified HGV drivers (supposedly also a problem but to a lesser extent in the EU)… Short term this all seems to have kicked off in the UK when on Thursday at least one popular daily rag ran a story about the risk of fuel shortages and voila, everybody rushed to the pumps……. As for rule in lose containers of fuel on ferries etc, I suspect the overarching rules are probably buried away in national or international regulations/guidance regarding transport of restricted/dangerous goods but then the individual companies may put in place even more stringent rules….looking at Google again it appears some ferry companies don’t allow fuel in lose containers at all, so it’s operator specific.

To keep up with what is going on in UK (and elsewhere) go to the website of LBC Radio and listen there. It is a London based station but has regular news headlines. Mostly a phone in format that covers all current issues. Not just public phoning in to say how much they adore or hate Boris but heads of industry, politicians, ministers, retired police, care workers, etc. You get a feel for what is really going on rather than the "sanitized" dross that the mainstream media push.
Your kitten won't mind you keeping up to date in this way.

There are signs put up not so long ago at Dieppe & Newhaven saying no fuel to be carried, I saw someone having to empty his jerrycans into a tank at the beginning of the confinement, when I travelled on 1st September I was asked if I was carrying fuel.
So the best thing would be to fill up close to the Ferry Terminal including one extra conforming 5l container and limit your travelling while in the UK, easy for me not living far from the ports and having no real need to go any further than a couple of kms while there, not so for others.
I always try to avoid buying fuel in the UK as it was more expensive, less so now, on Tuesday for my return I needed to and found that the local BP station was out of diesel in the morning and also that night, no problems at Tesco so I thought no more of it, seems it was the start of the shortage.

To Portsmouth from where? Surely a full tank of diesel on arrival at any English port would be enough to take you to anywhere in England, with some to spare?

Chippenham, from his profile, but if I'm reading the OP correctly, he wants to be able to get back to Portsmouth from home. As he's currently in France the amount of fuel needed is to get from Portsmouth to home and then back to Portsmouth to return to France when the situation gets worse, so a round trip's worth of fuel, ie over 200 miles.
Mind you, 200 miles = roughly 320 km, at 5l/100km that equates to less than 20 litres of fuel, so a full tank should be more than enough.

There is no shortage of fuel just a shortage of drivers to deliver. It started when BP announced that four filling stations in Norfolk out of 200+ nationwide had run out of fuel. It would have been better if they had said nothing.
BP and Shell have their own contracted delivery fleets as do the main supermarkets so any shortage caused by people panic buying will be resolved by Tuesday when their tanks are full.

It might take a bit longer than Tuesday but Beejay is correct, on driving around Worcestershire people were queuing on dual carriageways to get fuel. On the local radio a lady who owns a petrol station said that she took more money from 9am - 2pm than she would take in a week, everybody was filling to the brim instead of their usual £15-£20 top up, she was now only restricting the fuel to her locals as she is not expecting another delivery until Monday. Luckily I have a nearly full tank, should see me all the way from Worcestershire via Caen and on to Brittany tomorrow night

It’s touch and go in a defender FFS, but it is exactly as you say, if I fill up at Caen and carry a legal 5 litre container, I should have enough to get me home, and back to Portsmouth when required, I have no idea how long this shortage will continue……
