GB's young (first ever Olympics) team won the eventing gold medal . After the show jumping phase Oliver Townend had slipped down the leader board leaving the young German Julia Krajewski to ride a brilliant clear round to take gold. Tom McEwan in his first Oplympics won silver for GB and Australian Andrew Hoy, in his (unbelievable) 8th Olympics won bronze at the age of 62. The commentators didn't rule out him appearing in Paris in 2024. Amazing! I then caught the closing 10 minutes of a 1/4 final ladies' hockey match between GB and Spain. Full time score was a draw so it went to penalty 'shuffles'. I've never seen that before and it was incredibly exciting. 5 players from each team took it in turn to play an attacker aginst the goalkeeper. From the 23m line the attacker entered the circle with the ball and had 8 seconds from then to try to get a goal. The tension was palpable. The GB goalie was fantastic saving all attempts against her whilst the GB attackers scored 3 goals, to win the match. Hockey has changed so much from when I used to play. I'll definitely try to watch the semis.

I’ve just watched some of the sailing and it was fantastically close for gold - I found myself cheering as Dylan Fletcher and Stuart Bithell won the men's 49er and Giles Scott was successful in defending his Finn title!

We watched those too. How close they were at the finish. Great skill, and great TV.

Do English commentators get as excited as the French ones do?

I did the same when the Italian won.. He was my fav thru the qualifying rounds..
Even though I have only spent a couple of months total in Italy over 20+years they are still my favorites unless against the USA.
I can remember sitting on a terrace in juan le pins when Zidane headbutted the italian. I was the only person there for Italy!!!
Stems from growing up next to an Italian neighborhood in Chicago...

I’ve been amazed at the skateboarding, much as I was with the BMX riding, hadn’t ever seen either in competition, but both were hugely thrilling!
Sky Brown, aged 13 years, 28 days, Brown fell in her first two rounds but with huge composure won the bronze medal for GB.
She probably wouldn't have taken part if the Olympics had run on time last year, as she had a very nasty skateboarding accident last year, fractured her skull and broke an arm and wrist and also competed in a qualifying round for the Olympics with another broken arm.
The silver medal was won by a 12 year old Japanese girl, Kokona Hiraki, with the gold medal going to 19 year old Japanese Sakura Yosozumi. It seems that Japan is at the forefront of skateboarding as Sky is half-Japanese and her family lives partly in Japan.

I feel like I've taken part in the Olympics today, as I stayed up to watch until the late early hours. All enjoyable to watch, but the skateboarding was brilliant. The total enjoyment and camaraderie of all the riders made it a joy to watch. That is the great thing with the X Games sports and IMHO, it makes a very good addition to the Olympics.

And the worst sport (?) must go to wall climbing. Roll on Paris, ballroom dancing, darts, and whatever they think up

UK will get the medal for the greatest number of injuries in track; seriously, why should this be, training methods?

For the first time since 1988 (when it was Russia's turn), one country has three male teams in the finals; France, in basketball, handball, and volleyball. And basketball and handball for the females. Cocorico!
