Hi We are in the process of updating our Wills. We have already registered one through a Notaire but our Notaire retired so we are going to another one in a different practice to amend/update. Can a new Notaire get hold of the original Will without us going through the original practice or should I go to the original practice myself to get it or if we make a new one, does it automatically supersede the former? I imagine something has to go on the original Will to say it has been superseded?
Thanks.

I think all French wills are centrally registered somewhere after they are signed. At least, that was what I was told when I made one about 10 years ago. This presumably means that any notaire anywhere could call it up for you and you could then file a new/updated one.

Wills are something we often see discussed on forums and quite often say we should get them done. Finding an English speaking Notaire that is right up to date with the ever changing rules is our current stumbling block here in darkest Brittany. We even paid €70 to join an association that is supposed to help new arrivals get through paperwork, etc. but it took them three weeks to respond and offered two Notaire's details. One of which had left the area and the other never did respond to our request for a RDV.
We remain without wills.

If you are without a will at least write one in English yourself. It doesn't need to be witnessed. We have written ours in both English and French. I then took them to a Notaire and asked him if they were sufficient for our situation and he said they were. They are not registered, just copied to our family and easy to find in our study.

And sounds like your solution is free of cost, too.

On that subject, what happens in France if someone married, and without children, dies without a will?
