In 25 years in France about once every 2 years.
You may be right, exile, but there will still be internal checks; this is France after all.

Are you sure? I see nothing that says passports will not be stamped. Perhaps if it all works electronically stamping will not be necessary but I see nothing that says that will be the case. Elsewhere I have a number of visas and every one has an entry and exit stamp alongside in my passport. Indeed some countries have stapled their visa into the passport.

I had an interesting time entering Gibraltar on foot two weeks back ( my Gammon Steaks bought in Waitrose Portugal still safe in my campervan 30 minutes away in Spain ) Passports and Titre de Séjour Permanent needed to be whipped out pretty quick otherwise please accompany me next door it was like East Germany border checks in Berlin leaving Gibraltar was even worse baggage checks but my M and S under pants passed

The stamping is an intermediary before the electronic system is put in place. From that point the days in Schengen will be recorded automatically. Only a fool would consider overstaying their time in the Zone after that as the consequences can be heavy.

What might the consequences be? For a start you could be banned from the Schengen Zone for up to five years. That might be a pain for second home owners.
