Gone midnight and still 2C. Fingers crossed and we may just get away without a frost.

We need a frost or two, it kills off lots of bugs which will eat your lovely veg next year, also it breaks up the soil into nice crumbly pieces, so frost is good, in moderation.

After another damp and windy night we still have the wind blowing plus very grey, overcast skies. Doubt we'll see any sunshine today.

Night before last 0.9 deg , you can see on the beans outside that it was very nearly a frost. Of course we need frost , but we are never 100% prepared. Rain all day today , so work inside.

Well we look to have got away with it. Raspberries still solid, Dahlias still alive above ground, Broad beans still standing proud and the real tell tale, the Fennel shows no signs of wilting. I think this is the most sensitive plant we have. Mind they are being lifted today to avoid disappointment if/when we do get a frost.

A couple in January would be acceptable What we don't want is a repeat of the late, killing spring frosts that have happened for the last two years.

Jasmine has been flowering for about 10 days, very pretty, but I spotted a primrose in flower at the far end of the garden, just lovely.

Cold and foggy all day with the thermometer sitting at zero. The broad beans were showing signs of being frosted so I cropped everything that looked as if there were beans in the pods. Some ended no bigger than peas but if left they would have started to rot as soon as the temperatures increased. With luck some of the plants will survive the winter and give another crop in the spring but I am not holding my breath on that one.
Just stepped outside to a light covering of snow, so I think the decision to crop was a good one.

Had a very light ground frost last week, but no harm done (the only advantage of gardening on a slope) and at least it's killed off the wasps. There does seem to be more cloud cover here than when we first arrived..it used to be cold = sunny, warmer = wet and the effect of the sun, even in winter, was noticeable. Not keen on cold and cloudy or foggy Apart from rose-pruning and the never-ending weeding, pottering in the temporary conservatory is the preferred winter activity Will post photos when I sort out how to get them to load the right way up!

Not keen on cold and cloudy or foggy The last few days have been heavily overcast with all-day fog yesterday. When people ask why we stay here in winter, I tell them that back in the UK we enjoyed 6-7 months of what seemed like continuous grey and at least here we have 4 seasons.

Do you think it's too late to plant Broad bean seeds? They were my late husbands favourite veg so I'd like to plant some in his memory but I need them grown and harvested early in the season otherwise they take up too much space on my small plot.

I would say you would need to wait until March now. They may not germinate if the temperature drop as they are prone to do end January and February. Certainly we are due a cold period at the end of next week.
Having said that, you could always try. All you would lose is the seed.

I’d risk it too, Mangetout, I love broad beans, and if planting in March isn’t a goer for you, why not try it?
Primroses are continuing to flower all over the garden and quite a lot of daffodils are poking through the soil.
The garden is so soggy, with flowerbeds flooded. My husband went down the far shed earlier and says that it’s very wet in there, with mould growing in places; we rarely go in there, so it might have been mouldy for quite some time. Roll on summer ….. but not too hot! 🤞
