I received an email in my spam purportedly from the Paris police saying that I had been watching child pornography and to click an email link to defend myself. It had a dossier number and looked very real. Followed up by a convocation. I know it's a scam because no-one in their right mind would send you an email to accuse you of such a thing, but nevertheless it is very distressing. All sorts of things run through your mind. I deleted them immediately but perhaps with hindsight I should have forwarded them somewhere. Anyone else had the same? Disgusting people.

How upsetting for you mangetout. These horrible people are in the main good at making the emails look absolutely genuine so even the most sceptical recipients can be taken in. Well done for realising and getting rid.

Had a new one yesterday supposedly from the public health dept saying that we were eligible for a "free" health kit, filled in form, address etc then next page asked for card details, it all went straight in the bin.

Which means they may well now have your personal details to match with your email address - so watch out for identity fraud

I had the police/child porno one a few years ago. I don't remember how, but this one filled my screen and locked up the computer. I had a reason to got to town, so I popped into the police station and they advised that it was indeed a scam and how to get rid of it. It involved switching off the router and deleting the browser cache, then starting the router again. Worked OK. The odd thing was that this happened the same day that I took a photo of our friend's two year old son skinny dipping in our river.

It will also say you are involved in the sex trafficing business. If you google the name of the boss woman she is genuine but it comes up with scam. You did the right thing putting it in the bin. The Gendarme would normally turn up at your door, even during covid 19 they would not send you anything by email.

Can someone impersonate me and look at child porn in our name? I have zero knowledge of how things work on the Internet, but the thought of being wrongly accused is terrifying.

Relax Mangetout .. I believe exile was replying to the post by Spectrum .. who apparently completed part of an online interactive form.

I don’t know the answer about impersonation, Mangetout.
one such message arrived for my husband from some evil person who claimed to be in control of the camera on our laptop and demanded a large sum if bitcoins transferring somewhere or other. My husband knew that he hadn’t watched any child pornography, but felt very threatened that someone could be in control our camera and taped it over.
I’d read about such a nasty scam and assured him that it was impossible, but he still preferred to keep the camera covered for a time. The sky didn’t fall in of course, he had no employer to inform and relatives weren’t informed - it’s a nasty, weasily threat even if you’re totally innocent if such terrible behaviour.
Not exactly the same, but I had a similar-sounding email a couple if days ago, deleted it but should have reported it - couldn't remember where I’d reported the other one to.
they are nasty and unsettling to receive, but try to forget them; if someone has a link to where we can report them, I think that maybe quite a few of us would be grateful to receive that info.

Unfortunately it's far from impossible!
Many tape over their cameras for that very reason.

Though you can buy a slidey cover thing which allows you to uncover the webcam when you want/need to.

You went to a second page. It may have said "page 2" but how do you know that it has not worked as a send button and your info has not been fed back to the scum? Pj does not have your email address.
