That is quite old news if you look at the date of the Newsweek article Oh, no it's not! Newsweek is American and the date at the top of the article is written in American: 10 November 2021. For confirmation, look at the tweet from John Cleese further down the page.

I never thought uni students would be so woke ! It has become so stupid now that I think people (students?) fall over themselves to find woke-fault over the slightest thing. It is a pretty cold day in hell when classics such as Fawlty Towers needs to be censored. Was there not something recently in 'Yes Minister' that upset some woke or fringe group..? As my Dad used to say: they need a spell in national service...

Not at all less newsworthy, and ajm, you're being disingenuous with your reply above: 1. you referred specifically to the date of the article, which was Wednesday of this week, and 2. he announced his decision on Tuesday, which is in no way "over a week ago". If you get something wrong, at least have the courage to admit it, with a deprecating smiley, rather than prevaricating.

And when well-known comedians are so sensitive that they cancel themselves from speaking rather than confronting some of the woke stupidities that exist today, things are in a sorry state.

I have a feeling that John Cleese knows he has a short fuse and did not want to get into, what he felt would be, a long, drawn-out argument. As you get older you might find you can't be bothered to argue (at length) what you would have defended/argued about before. Arguing can sometimes seem like a waste of time .. tho it does entirely depend on the subject of the proposed argument.

I can see exactly where John Cleese is at. He just knows that shortly into the argument of whether it is right or wrong, the vitriol will start pouring out.
Sheez! - how many times do we witness similar in these threads? How many debates quickly end up in personal mud slinging? It is all unnecessary and mildly unpleasant, and this is, I am sure, how John Cleese sees it.

Not everyone wakes up daily hoping to engage in an argument.

I think John Cleese is bit of a has-been. Not very funny and not very interesting now. Would anyone have turned up to see him anyway? Perhaps that was what he was worried about. Does anyone under 50 even know who he is?
