In town today I saw the lads fitting the street Christmas decorations and wondered WHY? Back in the 1st energy crisis, street lamps were shut off or part disabled, yet now, with energy costs, excessive power draw (getting worse with Ecars) they are installing lighted decorations. A good coloured decoration can be just as festive. New ideas and better ways are needed, or we will all suffer worse than a dark night.

Are not LEDs new ideas and better ways? 1/3rd or more of the power draw of your old fashioned lighting..

Oi, young man, you're getting a bit quick off the draw with the epithets!

Some of the Christmas lights in town are permanently in place but not switched on, and workers were out putting the rest up on Monday.
The colour used to be more golden but due to the cost of electricity many are now LEDs, so have a brighter, whiter light. Those in the main square in plane trees still give a golden light as far as I know; they are lit during the evenings all year round. We ought to wander up one evening to see them lit and watch the starlings noisily heading off to roost in the various towers in town.
The lovely old lamp posts on the esplanade lit by old bulbs have been a beautiful sight.
