We have some nice door knoobs we are taking over to France, but the mortice bar in the French lock is smaller than the UK ones, I bought some 8-5mm reducers but they were too small for the french bar which i brought back with me, is there a standard French size, or do i just have some crazy bars........

You can get adapters here to make most handles fit.

I should add the locks on the internal doors in France are very old, so it may not be the current size that shops stock, using a measure as i dont have any calipers, i would say they are 6mm, but its a guess, 8mm seems to be the norm I think

It always amuses me hearing English speakers pronouncing Leroy Merlin in an English way. I used to do the same, but I know better now.

You can get adapters here to make most handles fit. Maybe so but I've never found any. My builder mate in UK gave me about 20 pair of nice solid brass lever handles still in boxes, etc. and I ended up taking them to the tip. The tip honcho gathered them all up and scuttled off to his office with them. I still have crates full of new door furniture, locks, hinges catches and hardware of all kinds that I've been unable to flog at vide greniers. They will most likely follow the handles to the tip.

The market says brass is around $2-2,50 a pound at the moment.. Sorry, you have to do your own conversion.

Does anyone call the spindle a mortice bar?
I have fitted hundreds of mortice lockcases and furniture & worked with many locksmiths, carpenters & suppliers & have always known it as the spindle, be it the lock spindle or the handle/knob/furniture spindle.
French sizes for the carré/fouillot are 6, 7 and 8mm with mortice locks having 7 or 8mm spindles horizontal surface mounted locks are 6 & 7mm but vertical ones being 7 & 8mm, different sizes again for crémone spindles.
It is relatively easy to shim up a spindle to suit a larger handle size, I have never bothered with adaptors, don't think I have seen them but no doubt they are available from the on line quincailleries.

Just read again that you have found & bought some 8-5mm adaptors, then your task is very easy assuming that you can file accurately, simply file down the ends of the french carrés to 5mm removing an equal amount from each face so it does not become eccentric like me.

I have just fitted new handles to new doors and the style I wanted was available in NL, these came with 8mm bars normally, but for extra groats, I could be supplied with the required 7mm bars and shims to fit the handles. One needs to be careful, I fitted them temporarily to aid lifting the door on and off for fitting and found the shim crimped to the bar by the screw retainer and removing the handle to fit it properly along with the. Over rose was extremely difficult.
