It had to happen, it’s been on the cards but now it’s official. Wokism is now winding up many in France following the decision of Le Petit Robert, one of the most influential of all French language dictionaries to include another pronoun into the French language. We now have, to the consternation of many including Mme Macron a transgender pronoun ‘iel’.
It’s been around for a few years unofficially but now it’s a word in common usage.
So ‘iel’ is now acceptable along with ‘il’ and ‘elle’.
The transgender/LGBT groups are celebrating whilst others in France mourn the dismantling of the French language, or at least a little bit of it.

Is it 'wokism' or just a natural progression of the language, the Trans community had no word to describe themselves so came up with one, it's typical that French language purists are not happy though.

Yes Tim, I think it’s a natural progression and was only a matter of time until such words came into the French way of life. Traditionalists in France like the UK are not happy but it was inevitable.

I wouldn't say "common usage" and the article you link to agrees:
I've only ever read it in articles like the one linked and have never heard it. In a report the other day on the news - the day that iel was added to the dictionary - journalists asked people to comment and only a group of lycéens were aware of the word (seen on some social media).
Its adoption by the general public won't happen over night, as using gender-neutral speech poses quite a few problems in French. You have to take into account not only pronouns but also adjectives and past participle agreements not to mention names of professions / occupations... In fact, turning a gender-based language into a gender-neutral language is virtually a "mission impossible"?
A lot of people are against the adoption of gender-neutral speech as they consider the modifications involved would change the language beyond all recognition.
