Whilst completely understanding and agreeing that the results from a sports watch are very interesting and give good corroboration/feedback on your own "listen to your body" intuitions I do think that if you are someone who is concerned about insomnia then the devices are counter-productive and become a fixation.
I learned not to think about or measure my sleep years ago when I realised through several extreme circumstances that the body will always find the sleep that it needs which can be very different to what we think it is, aiming for a number such as 8 hours really doesn't help. At one time when I was working 24/7 I was sleeping for only 5.5 hours at night but after a few days it became very good deep sleep and I felt the best and the most performant that I have ever been. I don't like getting up though so cannot discipline myself to ration my sleep, only circumstances can do that.
If you can recall a dream then its not deep sleep but REM sleep, I usually sleep deeply for 2 hours a night out of 7 to 8 hours average, when I am very active and only sleeping 5-6 hours the deep sleep will go up to 3 hours and I awake feeling totally refreshed.
If I go to bed with lots of aches & pains from heavy work & wake up without any and feeling bright i know that I will have had up to 4 hours of deep sleep and my Garmin watch confirms that.

Agree in principal .. but you are a good 10 years younger than the youngest of we three poor sleepers, and that makes a huge difference. Ten years ago my 'poor sleep' pattern was much better than it is now, as the hours of continuous sleep (of any flavour) have deteriorated hugely over that time. I used to achieve 4-5 hours of continuous sleep fairly regularly 10 years ago, but that is but a distant memory now due to various health issues that exist now but didn't have such an impact before. I agree about a FitBit as my daughter swears by hers .. she wanted to buy me one but I politely declined as i think it would make me more anxious about not sleeping than I am now.

For me it is the same but with the temperature. If I do look at the forecast it is for rain or wind, not the temperature.. If you ( I ) know it is going to be 100 or 5 degrees then you ( I ) will be hot/cold. Sometimes not knowing is better than knowing...

Hi Sue, good point about age, I can't sleep as long or as deeply as I used to but thats a positive as I can finally drag myself out of bed at a reasonable time in the mornings, I'm currently in the UK where I don't have the blackout volets as in France and am working outside all day. For the first time ever my body is in sync with the daylight hours, I am eating at normal times and going to bed at a normal hour, both abnormal to me. I don't think I am sleeping any better or worse, just differently. It might be perfectly normal to sleep less and differently as we age, after all the teenage years are those where we are programmed to sleep the most, I deliberately said "sleep differently" and not "sleep worse" as I think sleep is like love the in Bachman Turner Overdrive song _ "They say that any love (sleep) is good love (sleep, so I took what I could get............."

I totally agree - I mentioned in a recent post feeling particularly refreshed by deep sleep, not recalling a dream. My sleep patterns now are similar to the first had breast cancer, and that my current lack of sleep is caused by my concerns about my husband’s health over the past few weeks, so I’m hoping that when we manage to return home things will calm down again. That would mean fairly short hours of sleep but often of good quality, leaving me feeling refreshed.
