Does anyone know if Germany is similar to us whereby lots of policies don’t payout for natural disasters like storms and floods, how awful to have already encountered that nightmare to then find out you are not insured……..

I don’t know the answer to your question but like everyone I’m horrified by what I’m seeing there. I know the area really well, Ahrweiller/Altenhar was one of my favourite places to go when I lived in Germany, the Weinachts Markts there were lovely. I have a picture of Altenahr hanging in my kitchen. 😕 My heart goes out to everyone in the area.

What a terrible tragedy, just devastating that so many people have lost their lives and so many more still missing.

And it's not a lot better in certain parts of Belgium either. Makes our occasional (frequent) moans about the rain pale into insignificance. I'd think twice or thrice now about moving anywhere that's in similar proximity to a river, lovely though it may be on a hot summer's day.

The video and pictures on the French news this evening and last night were 'impressionnant'.
Not only Germany but Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands. Some also in the North East of France but noway as bad as the other countries.
How devastating water can be!

I am sure the state of emergency that has been declared will take care of insurance issues in Germany - not sure if this works like the MIB in the UK for uninsured road accidents or whether the state looks after the costs. Never actually owned a property in Germany always rented, so have no real feel for the buildings insurance.
I too know Ahrtal quite well (though not the towns and villages mentioned in the news reports) and have former work colleagues who lived near Erftstadt where the "sinkhole" has opened up. I just hope they are safe and the impact on them has been minimal.
